VLC and subtitles

I am an avid English subtitle user and was wondering: Sometimes I will go to open the subtitle I have downloaded and there is one already loaded. I'm not sure if it is because the show already had a subtitle embedded, or if VLC is able to selectively find and load a subtitle I have downloaded, which the latter may seem odd. It does not happen all the time.
Also on some subtitles, there seems to be a sort of chronic "slipping" where the track syncronization has to be constantly adjusted because it won't stay in sync.
Is this a known problem?
Thanks.

VLC autodetect subtitles if they are named in the same way as the movie.

-very cool. Thanks.

Any thoughts on the "slipping" issue?
I understand that some subtitles need to be initially synced up and then they are fine, and it may be that the subtitle file is somehow not compatible with the video file, or it is just corrupted and I need to try a different .srt file?

It's hard to use, but you can synchronise the subtitles with VLC.
