VLC forgets file associations

This has been bothering me for a while and now is the time to make a thread about it. Every time I restart my computer VLC forgets its associations with all filetypes, so every time I restart my computer I have to reinstall VLC (I can't set the file associations if I don't) go to tools > preferences > set up associations > save and then it's all good until I restart my computer . This just started happening randomly one day and was just one of those things I dealt with every time I reboot my computer. I've tried upgrading, downgrading, giving video and audio file associations to different applications, no luck. As far as I'm aware VLC is the only program on my PC that has this problem all other programs remember their associations. Any help?

hmmm did u try to set the file associations in windows control panel ?
i always do this (because old vlc versions had problems with file associations)
(win 7)
control panel > programs > default programs >
set default programs ( if u want to assign all files to vlc ) or
associate a file type or protocol with a program ( if u want to assign only some file types to vlc )
i use "set default programs" and assign all supported file types to vlc
this should work
(if not may be u r using other players which will restore there own association on program start)

It doesn't even show up in the default programs window until I reinstall it. I'm guessing that's the problem, for some reason windows doesn't recognize VLC on bootup, but if I reinstall and go back to the window it's there.

if you are on window 7, run as administrator your vlc then set up associations
