VLC 2.1.1 doesn't work on my XP-SP3

There is no audio, no video and there's some colorful band on the bottom of the VLC window. Screenshot of how it looks is here:

So far .avi and .mov files failed to play.
Previous version 2.0.6 works perfectly well.

Try to reset preferences, delete %appdata%\vlc folder and/or set different video and audio output module in VLC preferences.

I think your instruction is for Windows 7. XP has no such directory, but I did clean out what's in Documents and Settings. That said, I did a clean install anyway, and it still didn't work, so I reinstalled 2.0.6.

Type %appdata% in Start > Run... or in Address bar of Windows Explorer.
Different video and audio output module in VLC preferences?

I see. Variable appdata on XP is the same thing as Docs and Settings.
I have no idea about the output module. I never change anything in VLC other than Aspect ratio and block auto updates and internet
so it's all default settings. If I knew where you're going with the question then I'm willing to put 2.1.1 back and find the answers, but please do tell me the specific things to tell you. Thanks.
Edit: I see I'm not the only victim of 2.1.1 - see this XP thread, last 2 posts

O.K.
Uninstall VLC, delete %appdata%\vlc folder, install latest VLC.
Play some video.
Diagnostics:
Tools > Messages: Verbosity [2 (debug)] >> logs
Check also "Modules Tree" tab for default Video and Audio module.
Video output module:
Tools > Preferences > ( Show settings = Simple ) > Video: Output
or
Tools > Preferences > ( Show settings = All ) > Video > Output modules > Video output module
DirectX (DirectDraw) works for me instead of the default Direct3D.
Then there could be hardware acceleration related problems.
Audio output module:
Tools > Preferences > ( Show settings = Simple ) > Audio: Output module
Tools > Preferences > ( Show settings = All ) > Audio > Output modules > Audio output module
Also "[v] Use float32 output" setting of appropriate output module can cause troubles.
Save changes, restart VLC.

OMG! it now works. I can't be happier since I'm hooked on VLC.
Your clues gave me something to start with, so with Device management and the log in hand, your fixes were clear. Anything else, I'd be clueless, because the log is not easy reading.
.AVI, .MOV, .VOB, .MP4, and DVD discs play fine.
Devices on this laptop:
- Audio adapter is ATI SB200 - AC'97 Audio Controller,
another name I see in devices is REALTEC AC97 Audio
- Video adapter is ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000 IGP
and has something about 3D accelerator: ATI Mobility Radeon 9000/9100 IGP (RS300M)
- According to Everest, both support DirectX.
On to the fixes:
1. in audio, I just shut off that float thingie on DirectX. I did not change the device from default using "Direct Sound Audio" I saw in the log. Should I change it to AC97 from Default?
2. for video, debug log showed VLC used "Direct 3D device", so as you suggested, change to DirectX did the job.
Thank you so much, mederi.
