VLC not playing 'mp4' video format

Hi there, I'm new here and have been trying to watch some videos that a friend of mine recorded using a certain screen capture software, then put on his usb. The only problem is that VLC and many other media players cannot even recognise the file, even when I tried to convert the file, the file still couldn't be recognised. When hovering my cursor over the file, it says that the item type is MP4 but doesn't state the length of the video. Also, I used the software mediainfo to help me detect the file, but it came bank blank and doesn't show me any information about the file. Help please!!
