VLC 2.1.0 gets stuck in loop - have to kill process
Posted: 03 Nov 2013 07:32
by ephracis
I have noticed since I upgraded VLC to version 2.1.0 that is sort of "hangs" from time to time.
What happens is that the picture freezes and the audio jumps back about 3-4 seconds, then the audio gets stuck in this loop. I can close the window but the audio continues to play. If I kill the process the audio disappears but the process lingers for a few minutes. During this lingering I can open a new VLC window but I can't play anything in it. I have to wait for the old process to die.
This happens regularly, about every third episode (ca 20 minutes long). It is not limited to any specific files or file formats. Sometimes an episode causes the hang, sometimes not. Happens in mp4, avi and mkv. There is no specific time where it happens either, it can happen anywhere within the episode. But it seems the time between the hangs is pretty static. It never happens twice within an episode for example. I can always count on being able to watch at least one and a half 20 minute episode after this occurs. So there is some pattern here, it's not completely random.
As I said, the version is 2.1.0. I have tried to reinstall and remove cache. I have a newly installed copy of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with all the latest patches from Windows Update. Pretty much a vanilla installation. No other media players or other stuff. Have MSE running in the background but it never caused any problems before.
Have anyone else experience this?

I had the same problem at first last week with version 2.1.0 32 bit but it has been fine until today when I shutdown last night and started it up this morning everything I play randomly jumps back about 3 or 4 seconds in audio and the video freezes. It can happen 5 or 10 times in a 30 minute episode.
I have even tried installing the latest version 2.1.1 64 bit version on my Win 7 Ultimate 64bit system and also tried downgrading to 2.0.8 (which I know works on my other systems) and I am still getting the same problem.
If anyone knows how to fix this please let me know.
Thanks

I have exactly the same problem as described by 'ephracis'.
I am using VLC 2.1.2 Rincewind on Windows XP Professional 32 Bit system. I thought about using the older versions of VLC but as mentioned in this thread 2.1.0 and 2.1.1 is having the same problem as well.
Any help on this bug would be appreciated.
Thanks

I am having a similar problem. Killing the process doesn't work. The process hangs and a hard restart is required.
I am running Win7 x64 with a FX-8350.
Here is my log from the most recent event.

So, I followed the link and have gone through and done everything right down to uninstalling AVG and it seems to have all been for not. The problem is still happening and it's just gets stuck in this continual loop of audio, the picture freezes, but I can still adjust the volume which I thought was kind of weird. I go to shut down the process and nothing happens. Anyone else know of any other potential fixes? This has only just started happening in the last couple days. I have a bone stock Asus G73

I'm experiencing this exact problem too.
I noticed it started a couple of months ago. The only thing I can add to what is above is that it seems OK the week before MS Patch Tuesday. After I install updates the crash/looping problems occur again.
I currently use v2.1.3 on Windows 8 (x64).

I've gone as far as restoring my computer to back when it was working fine a couple weeks ago just to be safe and the problem persists.

I realise that I have left out a crucial point in my earlier post.
The issue only seems to occur when I am playing media from my Windows Home Server 2011 box. If the media file exists locally on my desktop I do not experience this problem.

I think I have found a solution to my problem.
I had recently switched AV to Adaware and it seems the Network protection function may have been the culprit. I have turned this off and not had a problem since.

I had the same problem so I have updated to VLC 2.1.3 Rhinewind and it is even worse, I can barely play any video for 5 mins before it loops and I have to use task manager to close it.
I am on Windows 7 and until this is sorted I am going to find another program to play my videos.
I love VLC and have it on all my devices and recommend it to all my friends so I hope it can get sorted

Just wanted to let you know that I'm having the exact same problem with VLC 2.1.3
And similar to what is mentioned here:
https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/6600
Could this be hardware/driver related?
I have NVIDIA K2100m GPU, Haswell i7 4900MQ CPU

This problem is driving me crazy!!!!!! Sometimes it will get stuck in the loop 15 minutes into playback, and others maybe 2 minutes in. One thing I have just noticed- I'm playing the video from a separate hard drive that just has data stored on it, and when VLC gets stuck in the loop that hard drive goes to 100% usage, but I can't figure out why that is happening. Hopefully someone will figure this out soon. I've tried every possible setting in VLC.

I have the same issue on windows 8.1.
I noticed that it happened when the window of one dell utility popped up in the background (and vlc switched from full screen to maximized).

I'm also running Windows 8.1, not sure if that's related to the issue.

Anyone figured this out yet? Seems ridiculous that there's no solution to this problem.

My VLC problems stopped when deactivating OPTIMUS Technology in BIOS.
The Intel Graphics in combination with a standalone graphic card controlled by OPTIMUS technology caused this very specific problem.
Must be a specific chipset (?), because I've seen laptops with optimus enabled without this problem.

I also have the exact same problem!!!
Do you guys also have Nvidia/Intel Optimus enabled graphic card?
According to this link, it might be the source of the problem:

Hi, I found a solution for this myself and uploaded a video to youtube as the fix. Hope it helps someone out there. It really ticked me off
