Can't play vids over a Mac shared folder in Windows anymore

I have a Mac OS X Mavericks computer and a Windows 8.1 PC. I have a folder on the Mac that is shared with the PC. I have videos in this folder. On the Windows PC, when I try to play a video that is shared from the Mac in VLC, I get an error saying it is unable to play it. I did not have this problem before upgrading to Windows 8.1 / OS X Mavericks (both were released recently, within a week of each other), so I don't know for sure which was is causing the problem. However, I assume for now that it is Windows 8.1, because that's where I'm running VLC.
Anyone know what I can do to fix this? Thanks in advance!
