Vlc Crashes computer since upgrade to 2.1.0 [Athlon 1600+]

Postby Phil.789 » 14 Oct 2013 20:49

 I have an old AMD Athlon 1600+ Cpu with 1Gb Ram 160Gb HHD, running Windows XP SP3 Pro. I have been using VLC for a few years without any problems but I have just upgraded to 2.1.0. When I try to open it, the window opens with the traffic cone but then my computer freezes and I have to restart with the reset button. I re-downloaded VLC 2.1.0 win32, thinking it may have been corrupted in the process and checked the SHA-1 check sum which was OK but it was just the same. I uninsatalled 2.1.0 and installed 2.0.8 and that works fine. Is my computer too old for this latest version or is there some other problem.

I have the feeling it might be because of the SSE2 intructions set which don't work with your CPU.
This needs more investigations, thanks for the report.

This is possible, indeed.

same issue here with AMD Sempron 2400+ socket A.

for sure is because that one of the developers have changed in VLC SSE2 instructions to be required and forced (without know that some CPUs doesn't have that instruction).

few time ago I experienced the same issue with GIMP, and I reported the issue to developers, and they fixed it making SSE2 optional only and not forced, so now I can continue using GIMP.

I hope VLC is fixed with same way.

The issue is probably the change of compiler.
