Video files so slow now..

Postby James828 » 04 Aug 2005 12:03

Hi, this PC's specs are as follows, 667mhz, 128MB RAM, 8MB graphic card.

For some reason now i can't play any videos properly without them skipping or playing very slow...
The weird thing is, I was using this PC before i was using my sister's when she wasn't using it, and it played videos files (even divX movies), and now that my sister got her computer back and i formatted this and installed windows 98SE back on it, it's having problems playing videos.
First problem was when i was trying to play a .wmv video clip in an old version of windows media player and that was skipping and playing slow.

So I installed VLC and that also plays the file slow and skippy but also with a a blue tint over the picture.

I tried playing a VCD just before in VLC and that also played the video very skippy and slow, but the colour was fine i think.

Any idea why it's like this all of a sudden? should i download other codecs? (I thought VLC has most of the main codecs in them?)

I'm downloading windows media player series 9 at the moment and will see if that plays them any better...

thanks in advanced.

1: Upgrade video drivers and directX installation
2: Make sure your video card settings aren't too high (leaving no videocard memory for VLC to do the drawing of the video).
Don't use PMs for support questions.

Could it have something to do with that i recently installed an ethernet card into the computer, and apparantly there's not enough IRQ resources and a audioPCI legacy device doesn't work according to the device manager, but the sound works fine on this computer.

Also when i start up the computer and it lists the PCI devices for the Multimedia device it has NA next to it instead of a number like the rest of them do.

You say update directX...since i just recently formatted and installed windows 98SE on here i haven't had a chance to install directX, do you think that could be it?

I'm downloading the latest version now...

arrgh, i can't get a break, i just downloaded directx 9, and then during the installation it said "a cabinet file cannot be trusted" and it cancelled the installation, what the hell?!
