Any way to make VLC far, FAR louder than 200%

Postby wisnoskij » 27 Jun 2013 06:04

I was wondering if their was anyway to change the max 200% increased volume to be something like on the order of 2000%?
I find that for every movie VLC, which I keep at 200% constantly, is about 8 times quieter than everything else on absolutely minimum volume.

If I could increase the volume to around 2000%, than it would approximately match what other apps seem to put out in general. And therefore be far more convenient.

and in general, some films are just really really quiet, and you do not always have access to huge powerful woofers to make the tiniest tweet shake the walls. 200% is simply not enough, in general, sure a laptop can make shitloads of noise, but get a general quiet movie and max volume with 200% is basically still mute.

It sounds like you are outputting 5.1 tracks on stereo speakers.

Hmm, I really do not know enough about audio to know what you are talking about.
But while I use VLC almost exclusively, I do believe I have used many devices and many players and gotten similar or quieter audio?

I am fairly certain that film audio tracks are often just very very quiet, but will look into some 5.1/sterio setting in VLC

VLC says Stereo, and when I change it to 5.1 it does get a little quieter. I use, what I think, is a 2.1 device (1 big and 2 small), which might be a synonym for stereo.

Tools > Preferences > (Show settings = All) > Audio:
* Replay gain mode [Track]
* Default replay gain [10] << increase the value
Save changes, restart VLC.

On-the-fly filters:
Tools > Effects and Filters > Audio Effects tab > Graphic Equalizer tab:
* [v] Enable
* Preamp >> 20 dB
* you can also increase all values at all frequencies (loud flat preset) :)

Tools > Effects and Filters > Audio Effects tab > Compressor:
* [v] Enable dynamic range compressor
* Makeup gain << increase the value

Tools > Preferences > (Show settings = All) > Audio \ Filters

Wow, you did it.
It is like 8 times louder now.

Default replay gain was set to -7, but no value seemed to make any difference, so set it to 10.
Preamp to 20 db, had a huge effect and and is great. Increasing all there others does increase the volume, but seemed to also add in some audio distortion (and it would not save).
Makeup gain Also increased the volume.

Were these non-default changes, or did I shrew up my settings years ago?

Thanks so much.
