I just downloaded and installed VLC 082 to play an .avi file as suggested. The video played fine but gave no sound. Now, none of my files will produce any sound even with my dvix or winamp - even things I was only just playing yesterday.
I searched through the forum and read many of them while looking through my computer but honestly know very little about computers anyway though I am trying to learn.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled the vlc and still have no sound whatsoever.
I would truly appreciate any help.

sorry, I should have added that I'm running windows98 second edition.

and that I get no error messages. the video plays just fine.

o.k., just found the messages. it's giving me this:

portaudio error: device 0 does not exist
portaudio error: cannot open portaudio device


I must sound stupid after three additions to my own question, but this is me trying to ride a learning curve.

update:
I guess I figured it out.

I'll never be an expert but thanks to those who checked my post.

just so other people having the sample problem know how to fix it: how did you solve your problem ?
