VLC 2.XX - Issue with merged mpg2 files

Hello,

I got an issue (since vlc 2.0, 1.9 no problems) with merged mpg2 files, where vlc only recognizes the first 2 hours of a 4 hour file.

Years ago i digitized all my 4 hour VHS tapes via my Panasonic DVD Recorder (2 Discs for 1 4h Tape).
The 2 Discs in vob format i merged via nero vision express back to 1 big 4hour mpg2 file.

VLC, Media Player, Power DVD aswell as some DVR's all had no problems, playing that files.
Yesterday i wanted to watch some of those treasures and realized that instead of 4 hours, vlc only recognized about the first 1h 55min, which is the point, where the 2nd part of the file was added.

Since i knew that vlc back then worked fine with these files, i tried some older versions and the issue starts at 2.0.

System Win XP and 7
Version VLC 2.00 - VLC 2.06

We need a short sample, can you make one ?
50 MB max will be enough.

Then upload it to EmbedUpload.com, so it will upload the file for you to several other hosts and then post the link to the file here.

Sorry for the late response, had been off due to work...

It looks like it's not an issue that the file was merged, i found out that VLC since 2.0 doesn't show any of my Nero edited files the correct length.

I followed your advice and uploaded an test clip with the correct length of 2:54.
But VLC shows only 1:20.

This was not an issue until 2.0.
Power DVD and WMP have no issue with this file.

Hope that upload was correctly done, doing this the first time, if not, let me know...

Confirmed, it also occurs with VLC 2.1.0-pre1.
The 'funny' thing is that VLC seems to count half the time, I mean when VLC counts 1 second in fact it lasts 2 seconds.
I think you should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with your messages log and the links to your file and to this thread.

Hmm, it might very well be that the file is broken. Please check that the problem also happens with a proper muxer software before you file a bug against VLC.

I'm not an expert, but why did all my files work correctly til VLC 2.0 ?
Also they are shown correctly in Power DVD, WMP and WMP Classic..

If it maybe helps you, i usually edit my files this way (since years)...

Copy Files from either my Panasonic HDD/DVD (vob/mpg2) or Dreambox (ts/mpg2) to PC.
Demux with Project X and merge with Cuttermaran.
Edit (Cut at start and end) with Nero Vision Express 6 (i know it's old but it's just enough for me).

Any other player I've tried is reporting the correct length.
Including FFPlay:

Code: Select all

Input #0, mpeg, from 'Nero-test.mpg': Duration: 00:02:53.82, start: 0.322511, bitrate: 4653 kb/s Stream #0:0[0x1e0]: Video: mpeg2video (Main), yuv420p, 704x576 [SAR 12:11 DAR 4:3], 25 fps, 25 tbr, 90k tbn, 50 tbc Stream #0:1[0x80]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, stereo, fltp, 256 kb/s
