VLC 2.0.6 playback stuttering/looping

Postby Stampeed Valkyrie » 25 Apr 2013 21:55

Not really a new problem, just at a dead end on how to resolve besides using an older build of VLC. I have multiple windows boxes all with the same issue. Any media playback, .mov, .wav, .mp4, .mp3... etc etc. VLC will not play correctly. What I end up with is a stuttering loop as it tries to progress during playback. Only commonality is they are windows boxes, some are new, some older. The fix seems to be to downgrade to VLC 1.8.6 or older and the problem goes away.

Not really sure if there is much more to add, I keep coming back and checking for updates to see if the problem is fixed the machine I am on now is running 2.0.6 but no such luck.
Files play fine in WMP... but wmp sucks.... lol

Thanks for any assistance you can offer up.

Do you still have his problem? Because I encounter it intermittently, and are not sure if its hardware or software related

Your issue is an audio issue?

Your issue is an audio issue?
At first glance my response would be yes. I have also tried playing .avi's and .mkv and other video files and the results are the same.

I did use my "googlefu" but apparently its pretty weak the only related posts appear to be telling me to change my audio output to Win32 waveout. Doesn't work. I will make note of this though, I reset all my preferences and the Privacy and Network policy screen, I unchecked both options and clicked save. Then it worked..... for about 20 seconds into the file I was testing (.mp3) then it started to garble and eventually loop and stutter. upon reopening the file it was back to not working again. I have been also keeping an eye on CPU usage, with just VLC going and whatever random windows process are running it doesn't get higher then 15%.

I use VLC on my linux boxes no problem.... in windows this is just weird.

Could you try a 2.1 nightly build on http://nightlies.videolan.org

I also wanted to add this issue seems more like a buffering issue with the end result of stuttering audio.
Could you try a 2.1 nightly build on http://nightlies.videolan.org

Downloaded vlc-2.1.0-git-20130425-0013-win32.exe On this machine it seems to have resolved the issue. I need to try this on some of the other machines to see if this is a viable option. I will check back once I get some time to do some installs.

Thanks,

Rob

So far I'm 5 for 5 on the success rate.

I have a group of machines in a lab that are all the same that I still need to test, if it works for 1 then it should work for all.

Thanks for the help.

I saw this issue reported and it matched issue with converting to .mp3 after updating to 2.06.

The static/stuttering output was actually similar to when youtube changed their encoding.
That was fixed in 2.05?

I did not experience issues with video playback. I am a bad source as most I have are in .mp4 format.
Ancient .mpeg, .mov and .avi actually played with 2.06.
To be fair the sync was a off more than normal, but I see the that on a regular basis and thought I just needed to change the audio to image synchronization and that fixes it.

I still have fallout 3 up and running so I also have KLite video CODECs 32 and 64 bit active to fix video issues there.
That is only different video configuration.
I did not install the Creative codecs on this PC for VLC as I do not have a Creative audio card in it. So only running vanilla audio CODECs.

Tested vlc-2.1.0-git-20130425-0013-win32.exe. Updating was normal, no issues. However it did not retain all preferences.
I did not look at all as I was looking to see if it fixed the issues. The biggest section not retained was the saved Podcast settings.
Did check option to retain settings and not delete them on uninstall.

Interface looked improved.
One issue I had experienced in previous versions was if you clicked item information in the playlist, the playlist would disappear. No issues with this build.
On trying some file conversions for TS and Raw (MP3), both failed.
Output of TS was about size of MP4 but no audio or sound. No changes to defaults.
The Audio to MP3 setting used RAW, however if I type path of driveletter:\temp\filename.mp3 the file name in the target path automatically changed from .mp3 to .raw.
Try to open this file and OS failed (WIN7 PRO) to open. Behaviour like unknown file type. I have seen this in the past before, you just have to delete that file.

What worked for me in audio out with 2.06:
FLAC OGG
WAV worked fine, single and multi-channel output. I typically use 44100 + 128 to 192.
File clean and usable, I just threw it into the Audacity application, tweaked what I wanted and exported as an MP3.

Was not sure of stability of other nightlies so I went back to 2.05 and check here to see if any updates.
Basically VLC is a great tool getting files into a workable/editable or directly usable format.

Hope this is useful.

Hi

i have a same problem on my PC. I have found interesting thing, when i play audio with stuttering and open some app it plays ok for a moment. It's only because CPU load is above 20%-30%, but VLC player takes only 1%-3% when playing with stuttering.

I don't get it why this is happening

i have tried versions from 2.0.0 to ver. vlc-2.1.0-pre1-20130505-1707 with no success

then helped for now the ver. 1.1.4 mentioned in another post

Hope it helps

To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

Just tested 2.07
Audio and video sync improved. I believe I was able to confirm singer was lip-syncing ;)
Did not need to adjust audio sync faster or slower which I did in 2.06.
On issue of mp4 to mp3 stuttering -- no stuttering or skipping on playback of converted files. Last test on a 9 minute conversion with no issues.
