Wireless streaming

I've streaming video from my local PC two Western Digital media player. I'm not using VideoLAN as am still learning how to use the software. Most of the time there are no problems with the streaming, but too often I have loads of problem such as choppy footage.
I've been told that videoLAN may solve the problem. But I am finding it very difficult to set up. Can someone make it very simple for me? I'm generally experienced with computers but I can't get a handle on this one, especially when it comes to ip addresses of local computers and so on
