[URGENT] .MOV correct orientation

we have suffered enough.
when will you finally implement the .MOV orientation flag support? millions and millions of people record portrait videos using iPhones and they all play in the wrong orientation in VLC.
I know VLC is free but this is ridiculously basic.
I saw you are working on metro interface... how in the world is this a priority over correct movie orientation?
cheers

The problem is in defining who "you" is. Why don't you do it if it's so important to you?
(In fact, the Windows 8 interface development is not a volunteer activity. It was specifically crowd-funded.)

as you probably know, you = vlc developers.
as users, we provide feedback to help you develop this app. if you need help implementing this feature please call out some devs.
If I'm not mistaken, you (rémi) was the guy who got the great VLC app removed from the iOS' appstore. now this .MOV orientation feature is being ignored and there IS a VLC app for android. what is this? crusade against iOS?

You are rude and insulting.
Rotating the mov orientation is very simple to do in VLC. Use the effect dialog.

as you probably know, you = vlc developers.
The point is,
as you know, that there are no VLC
developers. VLC does not generate any revenue, hence there is money with which to pay staff and developers in particular. In other words, your answer was in your question.
as users, we provide feedback to help you develop this app.
In this context, providing feedback is as good as complaining about the weather.
if you need help implementing this feature please call out some devs.
Can I have your contact informations for billing? Contract developers are not cheap and I cannot afford them.

not as rude and insulting as your stance against on iOS.
VLC has no developers? what is that little word below your username, remi? It says "Developer".
I see you have no intentions of helping iOS users.. so whatever, Im OUT

You may call it interrupting, but...
I do agree that fixing a problem with a codec should be a priority over adding a new feature to VLC. Whenever I make videogames, I always like to say you should fix your problems before you create new ones. Then you could kill two birds in one stone, and Windows 8 users won't have to update twice, just once.
HOWEVER
You do not have to be so aggressive about getting your problem fixed. Simply asking "could you please tell me when you think MOV orientations could be fixed, and if it isn't planned could you add it as a suggestion in the future?" would suffice. This is a forum and the whole point is to get your question answered, so being aggressive won't change anything.
And if you are so worried about playing MOV files, why not use Quicktime since they invented the format in the first place so are likely to play the file the best anyways? MOV is a complicated format, especially because of reference files or panoramas. Even so, it is pretty easy using lots of free softwares to simply flip a movie sideways so you can play it in VLC.
Yes, MOV orientations should be fixed. No, that isn't a good reason to have such attitude towards the developers of VLC.

No. People are tired of asking for this feature in the forums and being ignored. Do a quick search for "video orientation" and you'll see.
Let's see the facts:
- This bug has been around for YEARS.
- VLC developers prioritize UI fixes rather than this critical bug.
- Countless "nice questions" made on forums, ignored.
- Remi, the same VLC developer who is ignoring the requests, was responsible for getting the VLC app for iOS removed from the Appstore alleging license issues.
- There is a VLC app for Android.
- This is a simple bug to fix (IMO based on their experience with VLC) and yet it is being ignored. Most of the code is already there from the feature to manually rotate individual video (not persistent across files though).
With all these facts, I can deduce Videolan is intentionally keep this bug active to harm iOS users, since iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches generate .MOV with the orientation flag properly set. Videolan is probably being paid by Google/Samsung or other Apple-hater company out there.

You are an ass. Please go away with your hatred.
Come back when you have a patch for this "simple bug".

Hello,
I have registered the forums to post this suggestion, and I see there are people commenting on it. Could anyone kindly tell me if this is being implemented?
Best regards,

Apparently no one is working on a solution.
You will have to wait patiently or make the fixes at the code by your own..

Maybe I can get a couple of friends who are good C++ programmers and help on this.. to start: does anyone have the mov file format specification?

THe mov part is not the hard one, the data is already read and set. The issue is to adapt the video output modules.

We need a rigid system for quality and deadline enforcement in free software development. Otherwise the lazy and evil developers will just ruin everything. A set of effective punishments is needed, so the developers will reliably pay the users for damage caused by bugs and slow development, especially lost profits and wasted time. It has to be discussed whether the death penalty has to be included too, I personally do support this idea as it will permanently remove the bad developers away from the scene making place for the good ones.

Is it possible to "script" a
standard built-tin Rotation Video Effect for the playing video according to the MOV flag? When playback stops, it removes the effect. Sounds like a quick and painless solution.

Jack Burton

Can you at least add a hotkey that enables the Video Rotation Effect?

The issue is the video output isolation compared to the input.

So VLC does something like taking the decoded video and putting it directly on the screen?
How other players do the rotation?
Just trying to help.. thanks.

Other players (except QT) don't do the rotation automatically.
