Optimal Direct3D frames ahead setting

An older system is still running WinXP SP3 with AGP video/Nvidia 97.xx drivers. On the advanced driver properties/additional Direct3D settings page is an option for "Max frames to render ahead". Is there a best setting for VLC, and if so, what is it? Adjusting it downward from its default of 3 to 1 or 0 makes a major difference in keyboard and mouse response in games and other video players, at the expense of overall frame rate. Does it matter for VLC? Thanks.

It should not. Just check that you still have correct lipsync in VLC.
