Hi,

1. I'd like to know more about VLC's ability to play DVDs from different Regions (some say it works; some say it doesn't; some say video works, but there's no audio, etc. ). What do YOU - developers and users say? If VLC can play Region-DVDs, this option should pehaps be improved - programs such as (the officially illegal) AnyDVD prove that it is possible to disable the region code without flashing the drive. I've heard that JON LECH JOHANSEN, the author of DeCSS, is a member of the VLC developer team; pehaps he could do that. To remain VLC a legal program, it would be sufficient if it disables only the region code and not any copy protections (just disabling the region code is legal). AFAIK, AnyDVD is a driver that simulates RPC-2 drive with the correct Region, so VLC should also be able to simulate the 8 Regions.

2. When I try to play .WMV files, only audio, but no video is available. There are also problems with .WMA files: the player stops every second

3. It should be possible to copy snapshots to the clipboard and not only to files.

4. It should be possible to convert (non-protected) .CDA files (audio-CDs) to .MP3 and/or .WAV files.

I hope you will find my suggestions useful and can help me with my questions.

1: http://www.videolan.org/doc/faq/en/index.html#id239460 And about AnyDVD. anyDVD is a DRIVER. It sits between the actual drive and your OS. VLC is an application. It can never do the things anyDVD can do.

2: Seems like vlc cannot properly use your Windows Media Player installation. I have seen this before. Usually rerunning the Windows Media Player installer solves the issues.

3: This cannot be easily implemented in a cross platform way. As such i don't think it's a priority for anyone.

4: I have never heard of .cda files, but i trust it is some sort of image format for a CD. We cannot support all types of files in the world, it is simply impossible. We already support normal burned CDDAs. If you don't want to go trough the trouble of burning, i suggest you use one of the image mounter programs. These unpack the cd image files and present them to you as a virtual CD drive in your OS. I personally find such programs a lot easier for these kinds of things.

Hi,

Thanks for the answer, but it seems that not only a driver, but also an application can disable DVD Regions: I've heard of a software called "DVD X PLAYER" that can play DVDs from Regions 0-6 and also has the ability to copy snapshots to clipboard. However, this program is not free and saves pictures only in the .BMAP format.

And if you think that a better Region-DVD support is too complex for VLC, I would like to suggest you to create a FREE driver and add a play option to it.

And about non-free applications. Well they have the money to pay the DVD orginizations to tell them how their applications need to do that. VLC is a free applications and cannot do that.
