Change VLC recording format

Hello,
I need help to change the recording format of videos in VLC.
Currently when I record files in VLC they are saved to .ts format. But I want to change this to .mpg or other formats.
I don't know how to change the setting (have looked around and can't find anything helpful).
Would anybody be able to help me?
Thank you.

I'm not sure what you mean by "record files in VLC".
The converter dialog has a destination file name & profile, which you use to specify the output format. I can only test it with capturing the screen though or converting a file, hence my confusion about "record files".

There is a record button at the bottom of the screen that allows you to record TV if you set VLC up as a TV tuner. It also allows you to "record" video files as they play - if you press the record button while playing a video clip and then stop it later, a 'recorded' copy of the video will be created between the time you pressed and turned off the recording.
For me these files are recorded to .ts format, but I want to change it to .mpg format.

I suspect it can only record the raw stream as converting on-the-fly is too processor intensive and can't be done in real time. You will have to manually convert the files afterwards via the media -> Convert/Save option.

You can do it real time, but not using this record button that just records. Use this save option.
