Maximum Playlist Length is ?

Postby Mel_3 » 23 Jan 2013 17:50

What is the maximum number of items you can put on a playlist?

What happens if you attempt to enqueue an additional item beyond the max? Does it just bump off the oldest item on the playlist?

Thanks for any help

Your RAM is the limit.

A RAM limit is definitely not my issue, unless there's a setting in VLC to adjust.

I've got the latest version of VLC. I've started using it to play music because Winamp is being discontinued. I'm still using XP.

With Winamp I was able to save all of my song files into a playlist with no issue. VLC seems to limit the playlist size. Not sure if it's the number of songs or the total length of time. Either way, when I load all of my songs into VLC, sort them and then save them to a playlist file on my desktop, when I go to open it, over half of the songs are no longer on the playlist.

What's the deal? Winamp was able to handle this very easily for the past 10 years or longer.

The RAM (or the addressable memory) is still the main limit.

Of course, if there are really a lot of items, CPU may become a bottleneck at the UI level too.

I suspect that you have a similar problem to me which is that the playlist is (quietly) crashing when loading. So look at the track two places after the last track in the loaded playlist. (The track one after the last one wasn't the problem, its the one after that which I had problems with).

I have been having the same problem for ages. It definitely wasn't the RAM length - I have 8 GB RAM and could happily initially import 3180 tracks into VLC. All these 3180 tracks were saved to the playlist.

However when loading in the playlist it would stop at track 270. The actual initial problem track was track 272.

I eventually tracked it down to some of my Beastie Boys tracks having a strange <annotation> element, e.g.:

See the

Code: Select all

<annotation>&#8;</annotation>
element in the below track. This value of this element seems to cause the playlist loading to crash. If I set the value to be blank

Code: Select all

<annotation></annotation>
then the full playlist loads fine. I've opened a separate topic (https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=121452) for that.

Code: Select all

<track> <location>file:///C:/Users/Ian/Sync/Music%20Temp/Beastie%20Boys/Ill%20Communication/01_Sure%20Shot.mp3</location> <title>01_Sure Shot</title> <creator>Beastie Boys</creator> <album>Ill Communication</album> <annotation>&#8;</annotation> <image>file:///C:/Users/Ian/AppData/Roaming/vlc/art/artistalbum/Beastie%20Boys/Ill%20Communication/art</image> <duration>199425</duration> <extension application="http://www.videolan.org/vlc/playlist/0"> <vlc:id>0</vlc:id> </extension> </track>

I doubt that the problem is the RAM of the machine - I have 16 GB RAM and VLCC is currently 185 MB...
When I try to load the whole music directory, some 32000 files are loaded, 15000 more are missing. Does anybody know if there is a limit for the number of songs loaded in VLC or to be added to a playlist?

There are no limits other than the memory and, for some purposes, computational power.

I have the same problem when loading about 16000 items to a library (16gb windows 7 vlc 2.2.6). It stops loading files (sometimes after 2100 files, sometimes after 4000 files) but never more than 5000. I've reproduced this behaviour several times in two different machines. One of them having nothing but plain windows 7 and vlc.
It seems to be a bug in vlc.
could you please check it?

What's the memory consumption then?

I'm having the same problem. I've got plenty of space on my solid-state hard drive and I've got 16 MB RAM. (Intel (R) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.90Gh, 64-bit, Windows 10) I dance for my exercise using a music collection that contains 51 gigs of music, constituting 7500 individual pieces of music, which is 537 hours. However, this is not a huge memory consumption as measured in the Task Manager: 53 MB.

Nonetheless, the randomization engine seems to be no longer working the way it once did. I'm wondering about how this engine selects what to play next. Currently there are four levels in my file structure: musical type > artist > album > MP3 files. The only completely unnecessary level might be musical type, but I like being able to divide my music into classical, rock, jazz, spoken word CDs, and meditation music. These constitute the top of my hierarchy, and I think this type of classification is probably pretty common.

My problem is adding to the playlist. I have been adding to my playlist for a while and then all of a sudden, I add and it leaves no room at the bottom of the list to be able to highlight everything, from bottom up, to save what I added. Otherwise, I have to ctrl click on every item to highlight everything and save and there's no way I'm doing that. I have over 500 items on the list! Ugh; I'm hating VLC more everyday. But media player doesn't play all my files.
