Good settings for .mkv playback

Hi guys,

I have an Intel I7 CPU and a AMD/ATI Radeon 5770.
What settings do you recommend for fluent playback of blu rays / .mkvs ?
There are so many...

Right now it seems very smooth but sometimes I can see a little stutter. It happens with
every movie when there is a camera pan.

Try another video output module:

And/or disable/enable GPU acceleration:

And/or adjust FFmpeg threads:

You can also try to enable or disable some video options such as Overlay and/or Hardware YUV -> RGB conversions.

thanks for the links. I know there are these options. But what I really need is what
settings do you recommend to improve playback for .mkv / blu rays.

For example I read that in the wiki:
"Also if you have multicore CPU (or one with Intel Hyper-Threading), you can lower the FFMPEG thread count. To do this go to Tools -> Preferences (Show settings: All), then Input / Codecs -> Video codecs -> FFmpeg, then locate Threads, and set it to 4 (or to 2, or to 1)"

As I have 8 threads I set it to 8, but I noticed FFmpeg is not used when I watch mkv / br instead
x264 is used.

So how can I switch to ffmpeg?

Any specific advise for optimized settings?

x264 is an encoder so you're surely not using it for playback. Your video codec surely is H264 so you are either using GPU decoding or ffmpeg.

In any case, the easiest way to have better performances is to enable the GPU decoding Don't forget to restart vlc each time you save the preferences or they won't apply.

Seeing macroblocks or stutter in fast travelling camera may be a decoding error or the stream being badly encoded which should be considered too.
