Zoom in VLC is done with the Z key. Press Z to zoom larger and shift+Z to zoom smaller. If you repeatedly press Z it will cycle thru all available zoom settings, 1:4, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1 (i.e. one-quarter size to double size).

Look under Tools / Preferences / Hotkeys for all manner of keyboard controls.
You can change the hotkey by double clicking it in this list and typing a new choice; for example, you could change zoom from Z to 9 if you want it to work the same as your MPC. ;o)

when i press z, it doesnt zoom. it only cycle through zoom settings whatever it is?

Sorry it does not work for you. It works for me; I tested it before posting just to be sure. Please give your VLC version number and your operating system, in case that matters, and let's wait and see if a more experienced person has a suggestion.

Just check available hotkeys in VLC menu: Tools > Preferences > ( Show settings - Simple ) > Hotkeys:
- Zoom: "z"
- Toggle autoscaling: "o"
Do they work for you?

Then there are some settings allowing you to define custom default values:
Tools > Preferences > ( Show settings - All ) > Video: > scroll down to Window properties:
- Video scaling factor [1,00]
- Zoom video [1,00]
Just do not forget to save changes and restart VLC!

"Show extended settings" button or VLC menu: Tools > Effects and Filters > Video Effects tab > Geometry tab:

when i press o once, then i can change some zoom settings with z. but its nothing like MPC where you can manually change it and the program centers it automatically. when i change zoom settings (which is possible after pressing o once) the picture gets not centered and i cannot manually adjust the zoom the way i want.

what do you want me do with these settings? i just wonder if it is possible to zoom like in MPC?

but with this setting, i have to adjust with the mouse which isnt accurate.
