constant problems upgrading

Postby monsieurms » 01 Dec 2012 17:58

Hi...I have persistent problems with VLC upgrades for awhile. They just don't take. Currently using 2.03, tried to upgrade to 2.04 and it downloaded the file and then crashed. On next restart of the program, it once again prompted for an upgrade, but had not upgraded based on prior download.

This has happened before. I posted here and was told to do a direct download --which is how I got to 2.03

But realistically speaking that solved the particular problem, but not the broader one since the situation keeps repeating. How can I make this update normally without having to manually apply a patch?

I have a similar problem. Windows 7 64-bit Pro, 2.0.2 installed and working. The upgrade, reached either through the automatic check on start, or manually from the "Check for updates" on the Help menu, downloads a file (to some unknown location), then VLC disappears. A message appears saying VLC has crashed, do you want to report it? If I say yes, I get another message saying the FTP isn't working, sorry.

I downloaded the full installer for 2.0.4, unblocked it, moved it from Downloads into the existing VLC folder. When I run it, it asks for permission to modify the computer, I say yes, and then it gets an error "cannot write" to the directory the .exe is already in.

However, if I retry executing the installer, it now works.

My conclusion is that the installer needs some work, and clear directions as to how to do the install under Windows 7.

I don't think updates have ever worked for me. I get prompted to download, start the download, download completes, VLC crashes. Windows 7, 32-bit.
