How can I set default audio device to stereo?

I am using VLC 2.0.4 on Windows XP and when playing a movie often times the audio comes in as 5.1. But I don't have a 5 channel speaker system so I want stereo. And it is tedious to have to change the setting in VLC every single time I watch such videos. Is there some way to make stereo the default? (And before someone mentions my sound card settings - I do have my sound card settings set to stereo.)

Set the layout to stereo in the Windows configuration panel.

Thanks for the quick response. As mentioned, I did verify that the sound card is set to stereo which it is. Now as you suggested, I went into the Windows control panel. The Windows audio settings also were already set to stereo. So, unless I am missing something, it looks like both my sound card and Windows are set to stereo, yet for some reason VLC defaults to 5.1.

Also, it may be worth noting that on my system version 1.1.11 of VLC Player does set the audio device to stereo by default. So the new version is behaving differently in this regard. Any assistance would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm uninstalling the new version and reverting back to v1.1.11. Nobody is willing to help, and frankly I prefer the older version - it doesn't mess with my system's audio settings and renders faster besides. I'm very thankful that the devs keep all the versions available for download, as each one behaves differently and sometimes an older one performs better.
