AUDIO PROBS W/NEWLY UPDATED 2.0.4

First, lemme thank everyone on the VideoLAN team for years of great VLC Player stability. It's been my go-to media player since its inception.
This week I updated to 2.0.4 Twoflower and immediately began experiencing choppy, gappy, stuttering, squelchy audio on .mp3 files both spoken word and music. Tested the same mp3s in Windows Media Player and the files played normally.
I'm experiencing this problem on an ASUS 1500HA Netbook, 2GB ram, Windows XP SP3.
Comments?, suggestions?
