bat999,

I looked at the remlab link and seems I have to download more stuff - even though Fluidsynth MIDI synthesizer does appear in the Tools -> Plugins and extensions -> Plugins tab. And the site doesn't say how to install for Windows users...?

Yes, it needs an .sf2 soundfont.
Lots are available on internet.

I use "PC51" with Windows XP.
Probably downloaded from here ---> http://www.personalcopy.com/home.htm
Sound Fonts > Big Soundfonts

Put soundfont file in VLC folder (or somewhere else).

Remi's tutorial isn't only for Linux.

Yes, it is a known problem; not sure if it can be fixed at all.
