I'm using HD 7870 with latest 12.6 catalyst drivers, and I get this (.mkv file):

Last time I tried to watch was previous VLC version with previous drivers and it worked fine.

Try to disable GPU acceleration. I fear it's a driver issue.

Yeah disabling GPU acceleration removed the pixelation.

Bug filed with AMD\ATI support.
This is a bug in the 12.6 and 12.7 beta catalyst drivers.
Fix is to disable gpu acceleration or just roll back to catalyst 12.4 as of right now.
Also FYI I have a 6870 HD so this bug probably affects every single GPU supported in CCC 12.6
How the heck could they miss a bug like this?

Yep -- WMP works fine for me as well; however I still believe it to be a problem with the drivers as Catalyst 12.4 works absolutely fine with VLC.

can you clarify what you mean sorry "I still believe it to be a problem with the drivers as Catalyst 12.4 works absolutely fine with VLC."

Uhm...If I roll back the GPU drivers to Catalyst 12.4 -- VLC works just fine.
Still not understanding?

You have to disable GPU decoding not overlay. It's in the codec thumbnail in Tools->preferences then save and restart vlc.

Restarting VLC is not necessary, just stopping and restarting playback will suffice to apply the new setting.

By the way, this has not only happened in VLC for me. Since upgrading to Catalyst 12.6 I have had this problem in VLC, Media Player Classic, MPlayer, Windows Media Player, and Adobe Flash.

Even though slightly off-topic, might someone tell me how they managed to downgrade to 12.4? I have tried several times now: using the AMD Uninstaller, rebooting, using Driver Fusion to clear all remaining files and registry entries, rebooting again, re-installing from the 12.4 installer, and rebooting one last time. The driver reports that it is back on the old version, and it always seems to work for a while, but stopping and starting playback a few times will invariably lead to the problem reappearing and staying. So it seems that either I cannot get rid of the faulty driver version, or the driver has actually destroyed my hardware. If I can't get this to work again in the next few hours I'm going out to buy an nVIDIA card first thing in the morning, because I've had just about enough.

ok dont know alot about graphics cards etc but i know that windows keeps a record of changes and sometimes reverts back i forget what its called and all that but think its something to do with system restore (Start > right click computer > Properties > System protection) from there you can turn off or the protection system by clicking system drive eg. c:\ > configure hope that helps.
With the rollback of drivers for graphics card if i understand what your trying to do this image should help. (turn off system protection first should be fine to restore afterwards, maybe create a restore point first though read up on it if need be)

Goodluck :D

To go back to 12.4 you need to uninstall anything that says "AMD" in Add\Remove Programs or Programs and Features on Win7 \ Vista.
Then download 12.4 from AMD and install.
It is not necessary to manually roll back the drivers in device manager.

Also BTW I never have even heard back from AMD support since I submitted the ticket -- has anyone else contacted their support?

The 12.8 driver has been released. Anyone know if it resolves this? I ran into this myself but downgraded to 12.4. I may try 12.8 tomorrow if I get the chance, but don't want to waste my time if its still there.

Hey all -- http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pa ... Notes.aspx

12.8 released, in the release notes under resolved issues it says "Blocky video corruption no longer seen when using VLC"
I'm about to try this right now, will edit my post when I've updated and hopefully fixed the problem!

EDIT:

I can confirm that CCC 12.8 fixes the video corruption problem. Cheers to AMD support.
