2 problems after re-install (speed buttons and skin)

Hi.
re-installed VLC, latest V.
for some reason, i no longer see the << >> speeding buttons (for hastening videos), and, when i click + hotkey it does nothing.
second prob: the "search" "square" is no replaced with a circle.
how can things get back to normal?
