VLC stops playing every several minutes?

Postby weid » 14 Jun 2012 08:20

Hi.
I'm using VLC to play a multicast stream. At first, everything goes well. But after several minutes, it stops playing. I have to reopen the stream and again it plays well before it stops in another several minutes.

I have tried VLC 1.1.7 and 2.0.1 (on Windows7) and found the same problem with both versions. What could the problem be? It seems VLC is constantly losing connection to the server. But how could this be if everytime I reconnect, the reconnection succeeds and there isn't any pause and buffering process during the play before it suddenly stops and never resumes, which i think presents some confidence in the quality of the network. It's also not likely that the problem lies in the software because there's someone using the same version of VLC playing the same stream while not seeing the same problem. But since it's much harder for me to figure out something different in the network, i'd like to see if it's VLC that causes this problem (possibly due to some settings i made to it mistakenly)

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Below is all the messages from when I start playing the stream to when VLC stops playing. I have tried several times, and the messages near when it stops show different patterns, some complaining starvation, some saying too early while others too late. I've just posted one of my trial.
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

I'm sorry but I've asked for the full resulting log for a reason.

I'm sorry but I've asked for the full resulting log for a reason.
If I understand correctly, this is full. As i said, this is all the message i got from when i start the playback to when VLC stops playing. After stopping, it didn't print anything. Can you please tell me what is missing here? Thanks

No, this is not. We are missing all of the beginning.

What I did is:
1. Start VLC
2. go to the menu Tools->Message and set Verbosity to 2
3. Start a stream
4. Wait until the problem appears
5. Copy all the messages and save them

I'm not sure whether I did something wrong, but if i didn't, then I have pasted all the text I've seen.

I think the real beginning starts with this line:

Code: Select all

main debug: processing request item: udp://[239.255.1.41]:8001, node: Playback List, skip: 0
There are some other messages before this line. That's because VLC will try to play a default channel when it starts up. So when I manually start another channel (the one which will produce my problem), it would have already printed some messages.

Sorry if I'm wrong again. Would you please give me an example of what a typical message beginning looks like? Or point out what I did wrong in the whole process of getting those messages ?

I have the same problem. Using VLC player 2.0.2 on windows 7 64bit to play multicast stream. Everything is well but after some time it stops.
I tried to reinstall VLC but didn't help.
Here's the message:

Would be nice to see the messages after it stops too... I can only guess the byte stream just stops coming. That is symptomatic of broken multicast on your network.

That's the problem. When it stops, no message appear.
When reloading the channel, it plays again.
I have to stop it and play it again.

I have the same problem.
Environment: Windows XP SP3 (not sure all recent patches applied), DirectX 9.0c
VLC Versions problem reproduced: 2.0.5, 2.0.4, 1.1.9

Tried disabling firewall, logging in with different Windows account, performing virus scans, terminating all processes except system onces, changing router port, watching through udpproxy installed localy - still have to restart iptv udp/multicast channel after 5-45 minutes in vlc player.

It is interesting that other PC connected to the same router runs Windows 7 and plays iptv with vlc player without issues.

I remind some problems like that when I started to use VLC to receive the multicast signal from my TV provider.

The problem I was then, was related with the router, so that, only activating the multicast traffic into my router was enough.

Now I'm getting the same problem, but I have the multicast enabled. I don't know what could be. Any idea???

Best Regards

Observing same behaviour when playing TV shows from UPNP/DLNA server. Every ~10 minutes playback terminates. TCP stream captured with wireshark ends after receiving 79 876 337 bytes with RST sent by VLC(192.168.1.2):

Hello all,

I am having the same issue.

My streaming server is sending multicast to IP 239.0.1.2 and the VLC on a Windows 7 is very robust but it is freezing on Samsung Tab 8 and Galaxy S6. Using VLC 3.2.7 on Android and VLC 3.0.8 on the PC.

Can anyone shed any light?

Thank you!

Perhaps the Samsung Devices does not support Multicast.

You can try to Test the Multicast Network Function with the App "Multicast Tester".

S6, S7 Edge can't receive UDP Multicast when VoLTE Turned on
- https://developer.samsung.com/forum/board/thread/view.do?boardName=SDK&messageId=297057&startId=zzzzz~&startPage=664&curPage=666

Find no Multicast-Function in the "Samsung Tab 8" or "Samsung Galaxy S6" Specs.

I knew about App "Multicast Tester" and it works. I can receive Multicast on the Samsung devices. I am using WIFI only no celular. My streaming server is local. it is connected to the same network switch.

Perhaps your WLAN is not stable and robust enough over a long time.
Have you checked if other WLAN's disturb or interrupt your own WLAN?

There is for Example the App "NetSpot" to check the WLAN under Android.

Is your WLAN-Access Point or WLAN-Router on the latest Firmware?
Did you change the Position of your WLAN Access-Point or Router on an other Place (higher or other Room) in your location?

I don't think that my issue is the WLAN signal. The test WAP is on my desk and my devices less than a 50 cm (2 FT) away. The devices are on 5GHz which is not crowded.
I am using two different Multicast test apps, the one you recommended and another from Singlewire Software as the server on my PC. They never break.
here is the PC App for testing Multicast

Please try the following CMD-Script for a VLC-Player 64-Bit Version under Windows 10 or Windows 7.

Copy the Script in the Notepad-Editor and save it for Example as "Video-Multicast.bat".

Code: Select all

@echo off start "" "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" :network-caching=1200 "https://dwstream1-lh.akamaihd.net/i/dwstream1_live@120422/master.m3u8" :sout=#transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=1500,width=700,height=400,acodec=mp3,ab=192,channels=2,samplerate=44100}:udp{dst=239.0.1.2:1234} :sout-keep
1) Start the "Video-Multicast.bat" Script on your Computer.

2) In your Android-Device open the URL

Code: Select all

udp://@239.0.1.2:1234
with the VLC-App 3.2.7 and watch the Multicaststream.

I can play successful the Multicast-Stream in my Android 7.0 Smartphone "Samsung A5 2016".

There must be more to this problem ... It seems to have existed since 2008.
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=46320

I use a cradlepoint router with (2) top of the line cradlepoint mc400 modems and (1) wifi as wan connection all set to round robin data, they are connecting to overloaded verizon towers most of the time.
I to have problems with dropping streaming data connections.
