Zoom function

I have returned to VLC player after some months using other players but find, annoyingly, that its still not possible to use a simple ' zoom in ' option. If I want to increase the picture size on the screen I have to go into a complicated magnification function that seems to need resetting each time I play a video. Why cant I just press + or maybe Z ( this is supposed to be a hotkey but pressing it does not zoom you in ).
Such a pity because in other respects this is an excellent player. Can anyone suggest a way round this. Thank you.

z key should zoom by default. And shift+z should unzoom by default. If those don't work, check what Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) complains when you press the key.

Have been to tools- messages & put it up to 2............still not working?
Any further thoughts?

changing video output does nothing to help and ASCII crashes the program. I have the same question and problem.
What I have found is that hitting the z key in a NON full frame window changes the window size, a pretty useless feature actually, as most users prob go to full frame, and if another size is desired they can tug on the corner with the mouse to resize.
What the OP and I are seeking is a way, in full frame display to Magnify the display and then scroll to different parts of the screen while Magnified.
It would be like creating a display 2x, 4x as large as the laptop screen and then using the cursor to select which area is displayed. And to do this with a hotkey, ie by NOT going through the 5-6 step process of window...video filters...geometry...magnification/zoom..."X" out that window and then trying to get the upper left hand window/white box to actually respond to mouse input. and Then, to be able to go back to a Normal display without going through all those steps again.
Part of the problem is nomenclature. It seems when VLC uses the word/command "zoom," it means changing window size. Users use that word to mean "magnification" of a specific part of the image displayed.
Does such functionality exist and are we just missing it?

Hi, Andy, Happy 4th
Still no real answer on this or another thread. I got the answer:
"z"
from Jean-Baptiste on my other thread, Mangificaiton Hot Key, Does it exist?
I responded that he was either confised by the nomenclature or really didn't read my question..no response yet
I know it's free and people volunteer to work on it, and I appreciate that effort. It would be good to know it Can or Cannot be done, and that the question is REALLY understood.
Later
John
