VLC freezes on double clicking media library entry

Postby ineuw » 26 Apr 2012 22:36

My media library is a read only folder containing is 6 radio URL links in .pls format. When I double click a file, VLC freezes and crashes. It does work if I right click on a file and select Play. Is this a new (restricted) behavior? Previously, double clicking on a .pls file worked.

I also tried adding to the media library files only, and also with read & write permissions, but it still crashes when the selection is double clicked. If I don't lock the file or the folder to read only, VLC overwrites the file when a new session is opened, although it recognizes the folder selected in the previous session? Why does this have to be so complicated?

Thanks for the reply. YES. without exception, I can repeat this anytime. I am using 2.0.1 Twoflower on Windows XP SP3. FYI I have uninstalled the software using, Revo Uninstaller, deleted all VLC related folders, rebooted the computer, did a complete new install, and there is no change in this behavior. I tried this with and without read only permission to no avail. Right clicking and selecting "Play", functions flawlessly. Is there any other test that you can think of?

P.S: I am the sole user of the computer, but also made sure that there is only one vlc folder in all Application data folders, (Admins and all users, etc.)

Finally managed to repair it and without an uninstall. The "Media library" list displays the [+] sign along the .pls file as it always did, and double click starts the play. Thanks again.

I am not sure how and why this would be related, but the only thing I did was a thorough cleanup of old non-existent software leftover folders and files. As I was removing all Google references from my computer, (Don't use any of their products) I noticed that VLC had a Google related file (for video?) which I removed as well. Then, thoroughly cleaned the the registry and when I restarted VLC all is as it should be.

My problem is similar - when I double click on ANY folder, it opens up the VLC Media Player and it freezes. It looks like it is trying to open every single media file in those folders and then it plays one of them. But the more stuff you have in the folder, the longer it freezes. I just updated to version 3.0.3 Vetinari and it started AFTER I UPDATED MY PLAYER. I am running Windows 7 OS 64 bit. In the past, I could just click on folders and it didn't launch the VLC player - which is NORMAL. HOW DO I GET MY COMPUTER BACK TO NORMAL?
