I have a problem with audio distortion (for lack of a better description), but only when playing videos with DTS audio (as far as I can tell). I have no problem playing any of my audio files--FLAC 16/44.1, 24/96, 24/88.2, 24/96, 24/176.4, and MP3 of varying bit rates.

But when playing videos with DTS audio with time-stretching enabled and the speed increased or decreased from 1.00, I hear what I can best describe as closest to a "white noise" sound from a radio in between stations combined with a 60 hertz hum, switching on and off rapidly, interrupted every now and then by silence. Playing at 1.00 speed causes no problem at all. I never had this issue with the previous version of VLC (I have 2.0.1 now).

Disabling time-stretching allows the "bad" videos to play audio, but at increased playback speed, people sound like chipmunks, while at lower speeds, women sound like men, and men's voices get so low that they're unintelligible.

Does anyone else have this experience? I would like to be able to adjust the video/audio playback speed without the pitch changing. What settings can I check/adjust/change to correct this situation?

No, I do not. I always use the 3.5mm audio out jack on the side of the laptop that leads directly to stereo speakers or headphones.

I've tested a DVD with both Dolby Digital and DTS audio options, and when Dolby Digital is selected, everything sounds fine, at any speed, with or without time stretching. But when I switch to DTS, the audio problem occurs with time stretching enabled.

To try to eliminate my laptop/speakers/me as the cause, I downloaded a different player, and played the "bad" DTS-encoded video files with it. The audio comes out okay, with and without time stretching. (Actually it's not as good as a perfectly working VLC, but I think this is because of the other player's inherently poor quality.)

Please let me know if there's any more info I can share to help solve this issue.

Thank you. I'm glad that this has been documented, and I hope to hear good news about this issue's resolution. My hearing is far from what it used to be, and I found that reducing the playback speed (with time-stretching enabled) helps me understand words better without having to look for subtitles all the time. My guess is many users also take advantage of this feature.

I thank everyone who has contributed, and continues to contribute, to making VLC the best media player out there, by far.
