Luton, do you mean what you want to do is stream a video, and capture it on the fly right from your display? And you want to define the size and position of the actual video?

You have to be aware that what you will capture will be in a very low resolution. Even if the video says "HD" somehow, what you capture are the actual pixels that come out of your graphic card. If your display is i.e. 1280x1024, it is very likely that your captured video will be in the likes of 640x360 at the very best.

You might want to use Media -> Convert/Save or Media -> Streaming if you want to save video from your desktop action. Red recording button isn't for that.

OK thanks for the advice, yes i attempted convert save media streaming etc but VLC crashes when i do. I`m on core-i7 quad, dunno why it crashes (i reset preferences also to no avail).
I have the solution solved now, i tried a few older versions of VLC and settled on VLC 1.8 as best for Screen capture into H264 works great on this version,
I have 2.01 and 1.8 installed to different paths,VLC 2.01 will still be my main player.

There isn't any VLC 1.8

And VLC 2.0.1 crashes when H.264 encoder is used with Windows 64 bit. This issues is fixed in upcoming VLC 2.0.2
