How to create external cover art for mp3 files

Postby Andrew Gie » 12 Apr 2012 14:55

I would like to know how to create external cover art for my mp3 files. I have used mp3tag for embedded cover art no problem (inserting jpg files).
But most of the mp3 files I download seem to initiate the creation of external cover art - art.jpg files in artistalbum and arturl folders.

How does this happen and how can I emulate what the download is doing ? I have looked at vlc -H and the answer seems to be in there but it's too high tech :).

Someone even managed to attach one of my own cover art as an external tag, but that's a hacking story and will appear in another post when I understand more...

Cover art is downloaded via services like musicbrainz, Google image search and last.fm, and you can write your own Lua module in case you want to use some different service. e.g. Google image fetcher is quite simple
