choppy playback of 1080i .ts files with yadif 2x since v2.0

Postby GMag » 10 Apr 2012 06:13

Hi all,
first let me say that I don't know if this problem is general or OS-specific, as I use VLC player on Win7x64 and don't have any other reference.

After installing VLC 2.0.0 and (now 2.0.1) I have problems playing 1080i files when using 'Yadif 2x' deinterlacing. 'Regular' Yadif still works fine.
Using Yadif 2x with VLC 1.1.9 runs smooth and perfect, with 25-30% max CPU usage.
I installed a fresh new system on another HDD for testing, with the same results.

System is:
Win7 x64 SP1
Intel QX9650 (Core2Quad@3.33GHz); Intel X38 Chipset; 8GB DDR3-1333
Latest available Intel Chipset Drivers
GeForce GTX 460 - Driver v296.10
SupremeFX X-Fi Asus Soundcard

On a system with Intel E5300@2.6GHz; Intel G41 Chipset; 4 GB DDR2-800 and Win7x64, VLC shows the same behaviour.

Video material is:
Recordings from unix based DVB-S2 Twin Receiver (Kathrein UFS922, SW 2.03; uses .ts containers for m2v as well as h.264 files; no re-encoding)
-1080i resolution (native, from HD source)

VLC describes video stream as:
- Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part10) (h264)
- res.: 1920x1080
- Framerate: 50
audio stream:
- Codec: A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52)
- Sampling rate: 48000 Hz
- Bitrate: 384 kb/s

Other video formats I've tested work fine:
- PAL (m2v etc.), with and without any deinterlacing method
- 720p (no deinterlacing needed of course)
- .m2ts files (1080p)
- 1080i without deinterlacing as well as with the other methods that suit the case, includig Yadif('normal')

Because Yadif 2x plays smoothly on pal recordings, I get the feeling VLC 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 are doing something differently than 1.1.9 and previous versions did when they have to apply such intense-rendering filters to HD-material.
Settings for GPU-Rendering and Video-Overlay are the same in all cases, turnig off Hardware decoding and video-overlay changes nothing.

Sorry for the extensive post, thought I'd better apply all available information about involved hard- and software.

Anyone got a solution except using vlc 1.1.9?
Thx anyway

Is it smooth if you disable audio via Audio -> Audio track -> Disable ?

Does it get any smoother if you limit vlc.exe affinity to one core?

I've tried out some core affinity settings. After limiting affinity to a single core, the use of any deinterlacing method leads to choppy playback.

I have the same problem. Choppy playback of HD-Videos with vlc v2.0.3 when using Yadif-2x. I tried changing all proposed settings but nothing helps. I have a intel i5 4-core CPU and amd hd 7950 GPU, so hardware should not be the problem. I am running Windows 7 64bit.

directx gives me perfect fullscreen playback on primary or secondary monitor, 1080i yadif 2x, no hardware acceleration. opengl is better than direct3d.
if you can get unchoppy vid with a maximized window then you could set the window size to 1920x1080 and remove window decoratations

@dazzaa:
In maximized window it is also choppy. Where do i have to switch to directx?

@Jean-Baptiste Kempf:
my logs are identical for yadif2x enabled or disabled:

i get many lines with "main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 34 ms)" which i replaced by ...
