I made 2 test builds which both have different changes. If someone who has this problem could try both of them and report if either one of them fixes the issue (they might not work XP SP3).

Unchecking "keep the taskbar on top of other windows" in task bar and start menu properties solves this but in previous versions this was enabled and vlc in fullscreen mode still overlay the taskbar. I will try both test builds and report. Thanks.

I tried both test versions and neither of them solves it. However, unchecking "keep the taskbar on top of other windows" removes the taskbar on both in full screen just like in 0.9.2. The funny thing is that on one of my computers it works fine but on the other I have to change this taskbar setting for vlc to overlay the taskbar in full screen mode.

(Donno if this was posted on other threads but just for the sake of people Googling this:)

Solution:

This actually works for almost any game or software that crashes/malfunctions in Vista (and that happens quite often I'm afraid).

1. Go to the installation directory of VLC (for me that would be C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC).
2. Right-click on vlc.exe => Properties
3. Select the Compatibility tab
4. Check the 'Disable desktop composition' option
5. Click on OK and voila!

To be on the safe side I always go for the last three options and check all of them (visual themes, desktop composition, high DPI settings). This fixes most Vista related quirky behavior (esp. any mouse issues and weird video resolutions in games).

I hope this helps!

Cheers,
tScourge

have the same problem on Vista SP1 x32 and x64 systems, running VLC 0.9.6.
Although it only appears when I change the DPI Scaling ( under Control Panel\Personalization -> left nav bar "Adjust font size DPI") to Custom 150% (144DPI) or 200% (192DPI).
Cause I have my media PC connected to a 46" LCD TV with 1920x1080, I have to use at least a 150% scaling, else the fonts are too small.
If I change the Scaling to normal, VLC works fine as usual, I just have to stand in front of the TV to be able to read and pick a file :-)
Hope that helps with the troubleshooting.
Cheers

I had mentioned this problem about 6 months or so ago and never solved the issue until a few days ago when I changed Video Cards and I deduced EXACTLY whet you posted. It seems that it doesn't matter WHAT DPI size you change it to it will mess it up (I had mine @ 110 DPI as opposed to 96 DPI which is normal)
I honestly think this is the issue and once this is resolved will make this program 99% perfect in my book.
