Works for me as well with any video I've tried and also online video streams.
MP3 is playing fine too and the cover is displayed.

Just tested the "real" 3.0.16 windows x64 build and got no problems with MP4, AVI and MP3. But this is probably because I have a built-in Intel graphics here. My Windows 8.1 system is ancient, some Core 2 era Pentium from 2009. And current Windows 10 (20H2) is i5-3xxx, with also some Intel graphics. But: no issues wherever.

I explicitly changed the output module from "automatic" to "D3D9" or "D3D11", but everything still works fine.

Not sure what you mean by "real" 3.0.16. The official download site is still showing 3.0.14 as the latest up to date stable build: https://www.videolan.org/

Many websites publish the VLC 3.0.16 download link , eg https://www.neowin.net/news/vlc-media-player-3016/
It's a "real" VLC version?

I mean, on the previous page fkuehne first wrongfully posted the link to the Windows x64 version 3.0.15 build, but then corrected this with the real Windows x64 3.0.16 version link. I tested with the latest version.

I have version 3.0.16 and it is behaving in the same way. The issue hasn't been fixed...at least on my PC. I am running Windows 10 64 bit, everything is up to date. Oddly, instead of MP4 files causing VLC to crash, it is MKV files in my case. Even weirder, it is not all MKV files.
I have a multiple-season tv series that I am trying to re-watch.
I was watching season 6 which consisted of all AVI files. Worked fine.
Season 7 though, consists of MKV files. VLC closes every time I try to open them then the little VLC crash reporting box pops up. They won't play. However, the next season also consists of all MKV files and they DO play..
Fyi I had previously watched these same files a couple of years ago using an older version of VLC with no problems (I'm rewatching the series) so I know it's something to do with the newer version (s) of VLC.
All the problems (for me) started when that updating issue occurred.
Multiple instances started playing and all kinds of whacked out problems that were so bad that eventually I uninstalled the program completely, reinstalled an old version I still had in my download folder and then updated from there. Now this. What in the world is going on? I've used VLC for many years without issue (or only minor ones) now it's so bad I can't watch what I want to at all. HELP. I want my old VLC back!! :(

Thanks for your suggestion! It worked like a charm of course because...DUH...I had changed the video output settings when I was having problems with multiple instances playing. I feel so goofy. I hated to reset all of my preferences because I had spent so much time reading online to fix little problems like making network caching and other caching bigger because of playback issues (I usually stream from my PC to my laptop at night). Even down to my video/sounds settings etc that I had tweaked to my satisfaction over the years.
I really can't remember it all. I am (obviously) not exactly a computer programmer...I'm a 55 year old Grandmother. I tweaked so many little things over the years that I hated to wipe it all out but I suppose it's good to start from scratch just to see if issues I may have had in previous versions were perhaps resolved along the way as newer versions were released.
Thanks again for your help :)
Yes it's true, even 55 year old Nanas love VLC!!
