Files can become corrupt for any number of reasons and reinstalling an application reinstates a virgin version if you like which usually fixes the problem.

The videolan site to file bugs to has changed and has moved to code.videolan.org. It's now become necessary to register there which requires 2FA. After creating username and p/w users are presented with a QR code. The problem here is that my phone doesn't support that so I can't complete the registration. Why make things easy when you can make them difficult!

I had the same problem, and was able to authenticate by installing the "desktop" Authy application (https://authy.com/download/) on a computer. You can then use the alphanumeric "code" from code.videolan.org instead of the QR code, but you have to create an account with Authy and it's quite cumbersome.

If you want to avoid the two-step authentification, you can create an account with GitLab.com (https://gitlab.com/users/sign_up) and use that account to log in to code.videolan.org. I ended up deleting my code.videolan.org account and using a GitLab.com account instead. Getting that done was even more cumbersome. I think it might have asked for a two-step authentification initially, but since then (which was yesterday) I have been able to log on to code.videolan.org without one.

I know, that this is a workaround, but it works: I successfully used oathtool in Linux to create a 6 digit PIN from the long code on the 2FA setup page. The whole article about it is here:

Afterwards, I found this solution on the wiki.

So now one has 3 possibilities:

1. As in the wiki, just save the long code from the right of the QR code and use it with oathtool to manually generate the PIN every time one needs it.
2. Use some full-GUI solution like OTPClient on Linux or WinAuth on Windows or Linux (here with wine). One can create a local saved database and let the PIN be generated every time one needs it. There is no need to install some extra software on the PC or smartphone and sign-up for another account on another service. And the data is saved locally, not in some cloud. One has to, on the other side, setup such database on every device, where one likes to log in into the GitLab of the VLC.
3. As a deviation from the both other scenarios: one just deactivates 2FA every time before one logs off on the GitLab. This way, next time after the log-in, one would be asked to set up the 2FA again and would be once again shown the long code to create a PIN. There is no need to save any information locally. One just uses some program, GUI or not, to generate the PIN as in the set-up step. But: don't forget to deactivate the 2FA, if you don't save the code(s)!

In any scenario: save the recovery codes, for the case you lose the code or need them otherwise. And: either save the code right to the QR code in some file/program database or on the paper, or don't forget to deactivate the 2FA before logout.

A good find, at least they understand that 2FA is preventing some unsmartphonised people from contributing. As stated above, another solution is to create an account at https://gitlab.com/users/sign_up and then use that account to sign in. Gitlab.com does not currently require 2FA, so this avoids the problem completely. However, they may start requiring 2FA at some point in the future.

Yes, that is exactly what we have been discussing. The message on https://code.videolan.org informing the would-be contributor that 2FA is required lists mostly smartphone-only "apps", only hinting at the existence of "desktop" programs which one must go hunting for. Hence, the desire to provide solutions in order to facilitate the hunt.

This is mostly not the videolan fault. The whole help of the code is just provided by Gitlab. So they need to contact the Gitlab guys, so they would address this and extend the list with some desktop programs.

sorry, but this problem occurs since today morning anew: suddenly VLC doesnt play any Youtube-videos anymore:
first couple times it came some report, that vlc could not open the url, then somewhat later, one see only a not-reacting vlc (only something like a short light up on the time line) VLC is 3.0.16

the old trick with "youtube.luac" does not help anymore!!!
