I just wanted to chime in here and say that my 64bit VLC install (3.7.0.1 - Vetinari, updated 2019 early August) was unable to network stream youtube content.

So I followed the instructions from #thweiss » 14 Jan 2019.10:38.

I can report success following those instructions.

Of note: the youtube.luac installed with 64bit 3.7.0.1 has a header stating:
"Copyright © 2007-2017 the VideoLAN team"
whereas the header in the file linked to by #thweiss states:
"Copyright © 2007-2018 the VideoLAN team"

I am of course impressed and pleased with the amazing work, as always.

A new youtube.luac is needed, right? Or is it just me?
Currently, VLC can play YouTube videos but not live streams.
Playing live streams with VLC cause my PC to crash completely in just a few seconds.
This is an important feature to me, fortunately Pot Player and SMPlayer they both play live streams at the moment, but since VLC is still my favourite media player I hope its great developers quickly fix this once again... Please!!
Thanks and keep up with the good work.
