Hi,

unfortunately I have the same promlem. The last 'fast' version without this problem was 2.1.5.

Also 2.2.1. takes minutes to open a large .ts file. At least when opening first time. Reopen is faster. Does VLS store scanned date about the .ts files?

How can I make it as fast as in 2.1.5.?

For me, only some .ts files have the issue, and it *always* happens on those.
Doesn't seem anything related to the plugins, it is reading in the whole file before it plays it, for some unknown reason.

i see two different issues, maybe deserving of two threads:

there is the " slow to open a file issue", which is what the thread was started for.

I posted here because I though I was experiencing that, but I have re-diagnosed my issue to " slow to start 1st time only, after reboot - irrespective of whether it is opening a file OR opening the program only"

so I could restate and retitle that 2nd issue as a new thread if the devs ask me to, or I could just drop it if no fresh answers are forthcoming;

her is my !"today" test. launch program only, no media file, after overnight sleep, no reboot. launch 1 takes~ 5 seconds, launch 2 instant,launch 3 instant... that's the pattern that I see.

could we have feedback please on the preference called "collect and report statistics" as to how often that runs/ when it is triggered, and could it be something that affects 1st launch of the day ?

PS I do not have any large .ts fails so I cannot add to that issue. The largest video file on my system is a 4GB .mkv music concert , that opens in about 1 second, in vlc 2.2.1 ( once I am beyond my 1st launch of the day issue )

I am not so sure it depends on the size of the .ts file, I have seen it happen on 12GB files, as well as 4GB. I don't have anything smaller to test with.

i still have this issue - 30+ seconds to load only the VLC program, no media, after a reboot. but then it is very quick. I have version 2.2.1, on windows 7 and windows 8.1 PCs.

I also see this on a fresh install of windows 7 on a different PC, fully updated for windows updates, then VLC 2.1.1 installed - no previous bvlc versions ever installed.

I see that a previous post in this thread suggests that version 2.1.5 may be faster, should I try to find that installer or is it a BAD idea to go back 6 versions ?
it does not seem to be caused by plugins.dat as I check that is there before 1st launch

does the official site provide old versions for download somewhere ?

if I were to find 2.1.5 and see a big change to 1st time launch speed, on same PCs and with no other changes being made, would that be a valuable clue , or has that already been thought about ?

is it feasible to install VLC to a persistent ram drive instead of to program files (x86) and could that help at all ?

updating my own post, as developers seem unwilling to take part in any further discussion, here or in similar other threads ?

1.for me, the whole plugins.dat thing was a distraction and is not the cause. I am testing across 3 PCs of differenc ages and in all cases nothing is damaging plugins.dat.

2. updating to 2.2.1 made no difference. other threads suggest that if I go far enough back down the older program versions, I may find one that does not exhibit this, but I don't want to take that route.

3. exlcuding the entire videolan folder and the vlc app data folder from all AV cuts 1st start time by a few seconds I think, but it is still annoyingly slow on 1st run.

4. installation of the program to a persistent ram drive instead of to program files make a big big difference.

I see that the videolan folder contains 779 files in 258 folders.

362 of those are in plugins. As I only ever use a few standard video formats: avi mp4 akv, surely nearly all of those are irrelevant and should load only as needed not pre-load all just in case... ?

I speculate that on 1st run after reboot, VLC is accessing dozens, maybe hundreds of tiny files, which then get cached in RAM For later use. is that the case ?

so I now have VLC installed to ram drive in windows 7 and to an SSD on my windows 8 PC, both 1st launches are mcuh faster now, which seems to confirm that it is a "having to read many files" issue

I am having the same problem with versions 2.2.0 and above.
What i have found out so far if the media file is under 6gb on my Nas over a 1Gbps network it will start within 3 seconds but if the file is larger it will not start. but if I copy the file over to a local drive the larger files will start within 3 to 5 seconds, it doesn't matter if you map the network dive same thing happens. So i have re instill 2.1.3 and the problem has gone away.

Do we have a time frame when the problem will be fix?

i am simply testing how long to open only the program, with no media file

i figure it makes more sense to fully understand that behavior then move on to see if other issues are at play with specific formats/ file sizes, file locations

AFAIK there in no one single place for all such reports to be collated and compared. ( like an open ticket to which we can all add data ) I see you had success with rolling back to 2.1.3. did you revert immediately to that release or did you try other releases e.g. 2.1.6, 2.15, 2.1.4 ?

i ask because as in another post somewhere nearby there is a claim that rolling back to 2.1.5 was sufficient ?

I have no problem just starting vlc player version 2.20 and above with no media file, it starts within 1 to 3 seconds.
and the reason why i went back to 2.1.3 is because it was the last version that i downloaded.

i have always been able to get launch in ~1 second, for 2nd and subsequent launches after reboot , but never for 1st launch after reboot. this is the case for both win 7 and win 8 , across several PCs and several VLC versions

in fact , i reckon it is ~2 secs for first launch even with VLCplayer installed to a RAM drive !

So, is it documented anywhere what files folders have to be processed at 1st launch after reboot. I get that windows will then cache stuff, making follow up launches very fast, but I am still curious about the 1st launch issue - which can be 30secs+ on an i5 CPU with in install to a standard 7200 RPM hard drive and with sensible AV installed e.g. malwarebytes pro . That is a lot of I/O CPU cycles time !

I have real all related threads, even the very old ones & experimented with pretty much all suggestions therein.

Are you sure your plugins.dat file is not deleted on reboot?

i am absolutely sure that plugins.dat is not deleted on reboot. I have checked that many times on more than 1 PC , and have previously posted details such as file creation date as proof.

but that is just one of over 700 files in the program folder !

hence my question of what other files are accessed or updated on a 1st use after reboot.

your reply suggests that you are not seeing this happen with your own eyes and are always getting the 1 second response, but there are several posters in several threads with the slower experience

is there any form of debug/extra logging which could be enabled to give more insight ?

the plugins.dat is the one that stores the cache of all the vlc plugins/ folder: it should be less than 400 of them.

yes, i understand that, I think. but there are also many many individual files in that plugins folder. maybe they are only used to build/rebuild the cache or maybe they are all checked at 1st run after boot ?
e.g on this pc, plugins folder windows properties 361 files 28 folders. same or similar numbers on my other PCs . it looks like all of those files are .dll files , checking a sample of the sub folders.

the plugins.dat file itself is tiny - only 257kb - so it can't be holding the entirety of the 80Mb plugins folder ? I recall checking that and seeing the same 257kb size on each PC.

is that as it shoudl be ?
in notepad++ that.dat file seems to be composed almost allof text comments on what the contents mean.
I tried posting it here , as code, but could not seem to make it hide inside of code tags so I removed it rather than offend the board admins. happy to post it if there is a friendly way to do so,

You could use a windows profiler to see WTF VLC is doing on your machine that is so slow...

i guess I need something that logs all file activity during the critical 30 seconds- i think such tools do exist...

meanwhile can you confirm that plugins.dat being only 257kb is totally normal; if so I think we can eliminate that from the suspects list ?

with sysinternals process monitor running:

i see much start up activity relating to fonts, as well as with plugins .NB this is opening program only, no media file, and I do not get any font cache rebuilding message,.
I failed to capture the process log ( process monitor froze on me beofre I could paste it) will try again tomorrow. it may be an excessive amount of text to post here though & I have not yet figured out how to filter so that only vlc.exe activity is shown

I also saw that malwarebyes was checking all that VLC did. I have VLC in RAm drive R; via symbolic links and I have now excluded the RAM drive vlc folder in malwarebyes as well as thevlc program files folder so that should stop next time around.

Yes, this is normal.
It shouldn't be rescanned at every run, but it is normal.

NB I have a symbolic link from vlc in program files to R( ram drive)

much malwarebytes activity despite both vlc folder locations begin excluded. I can re run tomorrow with malwarebytes disables if that helps clarify.

the plot thickens. - so with my install it is building the cache even though the cache file already exists, prior to launching vlc player.. Whereas in, say, your own install, it does not need to do that every day ?

well that explains the initial slowness i guess, but then comes the question of why it is needing to build the cache daily.

could it be some flag or some wrong date somewhere saying to do that ?

posted , within code tabs, is a directory listing of my plugins folder BEFORE running VLC FOR 1st TIME, showing that plugins.dat does already exist, and has not been wiped by any clean/sleep/reboot process

a possible cause + fix ?
whenever I install / update vlc player I always copy a saved version of app data files from a previosu backup, in order to save having to reset my controls layout. so I use backed up vlcrc and qt-interface.ini.

could I be carrying over something that is triggerign this constant cache rebuild on all my installs.

I could make careful notes of controls and preferences , then wipe these & rebuild from scratch so see if that changes anything ?

e.g. browsing through those files with notepad++ I came across a full screen resolution definition of 1920 x 1200, and I have not had a monitor like that for 2 years!. all mine are now 1920 x 1080. so I wonder waht else I may be carrying forward that is out of date e.g. a reference to a plg-in that is no longer used ?

with the qt-interface like - I think I can see the section that defines what controls are shown on screen and in what order, so I guess I can safely cut / paste that section

I have been preserving vlcrc as that holds all my keyboard hotkey definitions but it would not take forever to record and re-enter all those

but before I charge down this route, is there anything in those files that could plausibly inpact on the slow initial launch / cache rebuilding or will I jut be wasting my time ? i do see plugins dialogue and plugins sections in the qt-interface file

update: well I began alterations:
1. moved the program folder back to program files, from ram disc, so that any delay was more noticable.

2. then I deleted qt-interface.ini, launched vlc . checked app data - still it not exist - redid my screen layout, from paper notes - which caused the ini file to be created in app data. ( so it only exists when you opt to customise your layout ? )

checking that newly created .ini file now- it is much smaller- all the references to plugins and plugin dialogue have gone.

so I plan to test everything tomorrow morning with process monitor, after an overnight sleep

if I see no difference to launch speed than I guess I move on to recreating vlcrc ?, but I am hoping that clearing the crap out of the .ini file may make a difference and may explain why I got slow behaviour on all installs ( as they were all given a copy of that same historic .ini )

hey - we seem to have a result. started in 1 second this morning, after overnight sleep, from the regular C drive.
so it IS looking like the old junk in the ,ini file was the mystery cause. I'd appreciate confirmation that makes scientific sense ( I posted some of that old code previously, for inspection) . I guess I have been carrying that around since versions 1.x

thus my fix, for anyone having similar issues , is delete the vlc-qt-interface.ini file from app data.
