"Run as Administrator" and it will work fine, at least that's how I solved it

Hello everyone, i resolved my error 1814 by right-clicking on the file manually downloaded and select "run as administrator".
Now i have my vlc updated.
Hope that helps.

I encountered the same scenario trying to update VLC from 2.0.2 to 2.0.4...the download appeared to finish normally, but when I reopened VLC, a window indicated VLC had crashed, and asked if I wish to submit a bug report. I was able to reproduce the same error a number of times, so I think it's reasonable to assume that something in the VLC update code is causing this error on some systems. I will manually download the upgrade file and run as administrator, which I trust will successfully upgrade VLC. No big deal, but in defense of others who have reported the same problem, I doubt the issue is due to problems on the target PCs....Cuzz

I am having the same problem. It does not matter whether I run it from admin or standard account on WinVista;the download appears to complete, but it does not automatically open the update like it did before. I also am experiencing the effect of VLC crashing once after attempting the update. I use a very reliable connection, so the download couldn't have been corrupted. I have always installed VLC to the default directory, anticipating problems later if I didn't. I have not attempted to do anything like modify the vlcrc file myself, nor have I installed any extra addons from the VLC-addons.com site. I run 2.0.2, which was the last update to complete successfully. VLC itself works normally, so it can't be screwing up the update. I am willing to bet that this is a bug in either the installation package or its installer routine. It appears from this thread that this isn't an isolated problem, and should thus receive Critical status.
If we can simulate real life so accurately, then isn't our reality maybe just one great big simulation as well?

I have 2.0.2 installed and have not been able to update to either 2.0.3 or 2.0.4 due to the crashing issue as described by many others. I have seen the posts about downloading some kind of installer and then installing the update but that is a pain. IDK - I like VLC but maybe am going to change to something else since my current version is having issues playing some files and this update process appears painful. I finally decided to post something only because I like VLC. My guess is that for every single post on this forum there are at least 10 but probably more like 30 people having the same problem and they are just moving on to some other player like I probably will.

Update - I ended up going to the VLC main page and downloaded 2.0.5 to my windows/temp folder. Then I installed it from there. My computer then auto-uninstalled 2.0.2. When it it then tried to install 2.0.5 I got about 35 messages saying it could not install different files like .dll files. I just kept telling the install program to ignore that (retry did not work). It then finished the install. I thought for sure it would not work but tried 3 different video .mkv files and all seemed to work OK. Maybe it was successful.

Nope - did not work. The 2.0.5. install process put 2.0.2 back in - very strange.
