problem playing WMV in VLC 0.8.5

Postby pglenn » 09 Feb 2007 16:15

I am having problems playing WMV files in VLC 0.8.5. Other MPG/AVI files play perfect, with ~75% CPU, but WMV files play at 100% (which itself is probably the problem). When playing WMV I get apparently frame loss on the video, perfect audio tho, and the color is off. I have to adjust the HUE way up to fix the colors. Then when I play MPG/AVI I have to adjust the HUE back down.

1) does another version of VLC play WMV better, and/or is there settings to adjust that would reduce the CPU usage?

2) is there a way to auto-detect the file type and adjust the HUE automatically? or else have a 1-click pre-set to choose?

HD video takes a very fast computer. You may be able to do 480p though.

?????

maybe you were thown off by the signature, dunno, but I am NOT playing back HD video (unless any WMV is considered HD???)... attempting to playback a WMV video file (512x384, WMV3 codec, 1h22m in 432meg file) and it is off-color and frame-skipping.

I have AVI and MPG files with MUCH better framerate/resolution/PQ that play perfect in VLC

VLC 0.8.5 uses Windows DMO codecs for WMv3 and WMap. If you are having issues here it is likely the Windows codecs. VLC 0.8.6 uses FFmpeg for WMv3.

well I installed the 0.8.6 version (I hate installing new versions) and it seems a bit better, tho the color is still off some but the skipping while still there seems at least less and smoother.... guess I will just play with the FFmpeg settings some to bet the best I can. I know it wont be perfect on this PC but I can get it "better"

Color is a function of your Video card's Overlay settings and if you play games on your computer, can screw with this. Try resetting your video card to its defaults for Color, Direct3D, OpenGL and Overlay using your video card's utilities.
