Windows Vista

Postby eAi » 20 Dec 2006 04:00

I'm not sure if you're aware, but VLC behaves quite strangely on Windows Vista, at least on Business N which I'm using.

OpenGL - renders very slowly, only a couple of FPS
DirectX3D - Blank
DirectX - glitchy, disables Aero (causing the whole screen to flash while that happens), with 'clone' selected and used on two screens, the actual rendering appears to get sometimes 'detatched' from the window it is in, on one of the clones, making it impossible to have two full screen videos.
GDI - even slower (as to be expected)

All I really care about is having one render mode that works, currently none work as on Windows XP.

On a similar note, on Windows XP I find that with clone used to produce two video windows for two screens, I have to move the window back and forwards between the two screens to get it to work sometimes, otherwise it renders black - moving between screens appears to force it to work somehow...

I just tried the nightly of 0.9 and it crashed as soon as I opened a file with a stack overflow. From the stack it looks like theres some function calling itself rather too many times! Don't have symbols or source, so I can't say what:

> libvlc.dll!62e4fb47()
libvlc.dll!62e4fb64()
libvlc.dll!62e4fb64()

etc...

Have you updated your display adapter drivers?

Yes, well, I've tried but ATI's Vista drivers are still in beta and are kind of broken... They won't let me have both my monitor's at their full resolution...

No video in Vista

Postby Raygun » 23 Dec 2006 05:43

Hello, 1st post ever here so I hope I am following protocol.

I am also running Vista with beta Nvidia drivers (latest available). VLC 0.8.5 worked great (although disables Areo), but 0.8.6 have same issues as described here (at least in DirX mode... what I believe is that default in VLC?). My primary use is as a video player, so I have not explored all the ins and outs... but I think the common factor here is Vista vs. 0.8.6.

Is this a known issue? Any suggestions helpful, but not critical if this will just be resolved next ver. as I can just go back to 0.8.5

This is what I captured in MESSAGES when trying a AVI file... but the late picture warning seems common in any file format tested (AVI, MPG, VOB)... I am only showing a snippit here... not sure how much, if any of the MESSAGES text you want or need.

main warning: PTS is out of range (5329136), dropping buffer
main warning: PTS is out of range (5305162), dropping buffer
message warning: message queue overflowed
main warning: late picture skipped (163473)
main warning: late picture skipped (123616)
main warning: late picture skipped (83625)

Yes there are some issues with Vista (use search feature).

Raygun: Have you tried that Direct3d mode? Those messages are common so they aren't related to your problem.

Thanks... had tried to search VISTA (how I found this) but missed that beta test post... I will continue there. But in answer to your question, no, I don't belive I have tried D3D... er... rather I don't really know how to :oops: I just used VLC to watch videos since Media Player 11 is a resource hog. But I will dig into VLC further and, if able, contribute to the 0.9.0 beta test thread.

Thanks again.

works with different chip set

Postby ludob01jp » 24 Dec 2006 02:11

Hi,
I use v6 on a notebook with vista ultimate, and it works perfect.
The chip set is integrated Intel.
On the other PC with an ATI board the video is blank (v 8.5 works fine).

I also use v.5 on a notebook with ati x700 graphics and latest drivers for vista ultimate build 5744. This works fine but v.6 gives me a black screen with sound.

Further to my recent post I altered the Preferences/Video/Output Modules to read "Direct X Video Ouput" and all is Ok

When I use DirectX Video output, I get about a 30 - 60 sec pause when I start a video, with the sound still running and my cursor frozen. Then the screen goes black briefly then it pauses again. This is with transparency turned off. With it turned on, the same thing happens but it turns off transparency when the screen goes black...

Odd.
