I have just downloaded VLC player for my pc. It is great but when I view a video in Firefox, i see no play controls (play, stop......) or progress bar. I was wondering how I could get those controls to display.

I'm experiencing the same issue (VLC 0.8.5 for Windows) with Firefox.
