Problem with "Always stay on Top"

Postby cesideem » 20 Nov 2006 16:10

Hi, I just installed the VLC media player.
In the video-settings I checked "Always stay on top"
But when I open a file with VLC (window-mode) and switch to another application, VLC does not stay on top.

After this I tried the nightly-Version (0.8.6.test2a.20061120-0330), but the same thing happens. VLC won´t stay on top.

Where is the mistake?

Thanks
Cesideem

Hello

can you give additional details like:
Your operating system
Your window manager
The interface of vlc you use (wxwidgets?)
If using an interface, if the video is embedded into it

thanks

Did you Save the preference change, Close VLC, then restart? That's how preferences get saved permanently.

Also, if the app you're switching to also thinks it should "stay on top" it will be equal to VLC and whichever has the focus last will be on top. It's just a style bit in the main window, and VLC doesn't have a lot of control over whether Windows honors it or not.

Yes, I saved the preferences...

Nothing happend...

I´ll try to deinstall VLC with all saved settings and make a clean reinstall. I hope this will work.

I am afraid I have always had a problem with 'Always on top', with the 0.8.5 release AND the new 0.8.6 test 2 release. In fact the new test release NEVER stays on top with the option ticked in the preferences and the drop down menu.
But both versions for me were useless as I always have had the problem where by if I swapped from fullscreen to window view, then back to fullscreen, the window would still show over the fullscreen image- I'd then have to click on the full screen image just to remove the window, which is ridiculous. The only way to stop this happening is to de-select Always on top. Hasn't anyone else had this problem??

Info: I use XP Home with SP2, and use VLC in it's default interface.

Always on top AND going fullscreen doesn't work and is a known issue:

Thanks for that- at least I know that it isn't just me with the problem. Hopefully will be fixed in the next version then.
