Compiled 0.8.5 version okay, but can't execute on winXP.

Postby frankwang » 01 Nov 2006 02:58

Hello,
Recently I compiled the VLC 0.8.5 version with cygwin, but it can't execute and without any error message. (I installed the VLC binary already.)

However, when I compiled the VLC0.8.4a, it could run on windows correctly. Why? What's the difference between the two versions.

In addition, I used the old tools to do the build process(gcc 3.3.3, ....)
because I tried to use the gcc 3.4.2 with newest utility, compiler is always complaining.

Thanks,
Frank

hi

a possible reason is that you need to delete your settings, in %appdata%\vlc or by using the start menu shortcut

if you managed to compile vlc, don't update your cygwin environment because it is broken at the moment

The coommand line options couldn't be loaded, ...

Postby frankwang » 01 Nov 2006 17:18

Hi,
I tried to load the vlc from menu. This time it displays the message as follows in the command prompt window:

"The command line options couldn't be loaded, check that they are valid.
Press the RETURN key to continue ..."

When I pressed the RETURN key, everything is gone.

Best regards,
Frank

Cygwin compilation is severely broken. I vaguely remember your issue where I had to revert binutils package. That problem is described in the cygwin howto on the developers page and might be related: http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/cygwin-compile.txt
NOTE: It is extremely important to DOWNGRADE binutils from 20060709-1 to
20050610-01 (will otherwise give weird results like VLC gui not opening)
But beware, updating -anything- in Cygwin at the moment might render the whole environment useless as is mentioned in the sticky post: viewtopic.php?t=27162
