how to get vlc movie window like on front page

There used to be minimal settings under view, but i can't seem to find it anywhere in .85

You can change that in the prefs:
interfaces -> main interfaces (or somethgin) -> wxWidgets

So I went to Pref's -> Main Interface and checked WX widgets as it wasn't shown under interfaces.

Now, VLC crashes everytime it starts! I see the window open & BAM, i get the windows error report!

I'm running WinXP MCE 2005, all updates done

ok, i didn't explain it well enough i guess
Reset your prefs (search the forum if you don't no how to do it). In the prefs category tree click on the wxWidgets node. You'll have a bunch of options related to that interface. Uncheck the one that's about "embed video output". Save and tada !

I reset VLC using the 'Reset VLC defaults and quit' shortcut.

Under Pref's -> Interface -> Main Interface

I checked wxWidgets

Under the wxwidgets submenu, I unchecked embed video

Saved, and now VLC crashes as soon as it's opened!

Well, i activated it, than VLC crashed during start up.
Then I reset to defaults and did not checked wxwidgets.
Well, the embed video was not checked, so i could not uncheck it.

This is not working for me either. I have made the changes described in this thread. However after closing VLC and reopening I get the same old (and frankly rather bland-looking) VLC original skin.


If I understand correctly, the directions for changing the look of the VLC player to the much more appealing look as depicted on the front page of the site and at the start of this thread, I need to de-select 'Embed video in interface' found in the wxWidgets interface module of the Preferences tree. Right?

I've confirmed that the change was saved by going back to the setting and it is was found to be de-selected. So what am I missing?

I've tried resetting the defaults 'Reset VLC defaults and quit' and again making the 'Embed video interface' but the video display does not change.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you asking me? I am simply trying to get the VLC player to look like it does at the beginning of this thread (and same as it looks on the first page of the VideoLan website). As opposed to the first 'look' of the player unskinned, which I understand to be the basic GUI as depicted here:

except 2 things:

- the WINDOWS theme is not the same
- you aren't playing a video of flowers

Isn't the difference obvious? Notice the beige with blue border of the player interface and likewised blue bordered video window versus silver metallic video window and player interface.

I don't know what you mean by 'display properties'? I don't see that as an option anywhere in Preferences or Settings. Do you mean switching to Skins 2 mode?

. . . are the player's features, the appearance of the player (which I am trying to obtain), and the WINDOWS download link which are all together in the same box. That was the link I used to download the player and I assumed that would be the look of the player 'right out of the box' so-to-speak.

The reason this is important to me is for gaining access to the Extended GUI interface (found under Settings or using Ctrl-G) which allow for the video image to be adjusted for hue, saturation, contrast, etc. I haven't been able to find a way to access these video display settings in any skin mode. Ctrl-G does nothing. It seems the only access I have for making these changes is from the Extended GUI in the unskinned mode. So, for example, to adjust the contrast of the file I am viewing means stopping the player and re-opennig in unskinned mode. I am essentially forced to use unskinned mode if I want to have the option of changing these settings. However I could easily live without the other skins if I could obtain the silver/metallic look of the player as shown on VideoLAN's front page. I am thinking I would probably have access to the Extended GUI by the same 'Settings' function right on the front of the player controls since it is layed out the same as the blue-bordered and beige version of my unskinned player.

As usual, any help would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps a moderator or developer might know why my default player looks the way it does or more importantly how I can get access to the Extended GUI or change the video's contrast, hue, etc., in skin mode?

EXACTLY. GO in your Display settings in your config panel.

I hate to say this but I'm a bit confused here too! That rather bland looking interface is the wxWidgets interface. If you want a different look you will need to change this from the default to the skins 2 module. wxWidgets only offers the embedded or non embedded modes.

BTW the wxWidgets interface will be gone in the next revision in favor of QT4.
