play .mkv(h264) on slow pc

Postby kobolds » 30 Sep 2006 07:44

i always having trouble like frame skip or c++ debug message show when ever I play mkv (h264 ) using vlc but only on video that encode in high resolution . so I do some try and error on the preference and finally able to run smooth .

my pc
dual cpu pentium3 1 gb
ram 1 gb
video mx400 32 mb

here the setting (make sure advance option is on)
1. set output module audio/video to direcx
2. on advanced , untick minimize number of thread and tick increase piority of process.
3. on input/codec , other codec , ffmpeg , decoding
- tick hurryup
- workaround bug = 64
- skip loop filter for h264 = all

hope will help people on slow machine using vlc

I'm not sure that all your suggestions here are relevant! Though they are appreciated in the light of wanting to help others. :) I will agree some of this is machine dependent and some of it is source dependent IE how the source was encoded. Also be aware that some of what you suggest is already the default like 1. or 2. a but 2. b would be dependent on how many sub processes were running in the background and may not effect h264 at all. In 3. a changing this can add distortion to the picture. Both 3. b and c are source dependent. But please note in 3. c that most encodes do not use strong loop filter settings.

like I mention before the setting for slow machine to be able to play by ofcouse minus quality .
my idea of this to comeout setting that enable slow machine user to be atlest play video without frame skip or video /audio unsync .

I hope vlc should provide option when install (next version) , and let user choose depend on they system. the default setting cause problem on slow machine.

for example (something like this)
1. choose this for less than 1000 - 1700 mhz
2. choose this for above 2000mhz
