how to make VLC work properly in Windows Vista

Postby Guest » 01 Aug 2006 22:03

VLC is a great player, no doubt about it.

Windows vista 2 (premium and ultima edition) has a new interface which makes window glassy and there is also other fancy feutures such as flip 3d,

however some programs don't like that interface, what windows Vista does is switch back to ordinary windows interface, (screen flicks a couple of times and you lose the glassy looks) for the time the program is running, then when closing the program it switches back to the glassy interface (dwm)..

This flickering became sort of annoing,

Afer a while I figured out a way round it and decided to tell every one about it, (in-case some one's got the same problem)

Change the video output mode to "Windows GDI video output"

In case you don't know how to do that, Go:
> Settings
> preferences
+ Video
---+Output modules
> tick "advanced options" (Bottom right corner)
> change "video output mode t Windows GDI video output,

and there we go, works fine on vista beta 2 now.
---- the only down side, it won't update on my 2nd (extended desctop) monitor, but i can live with it.

Hope it helped
leo

Long live VLC!!

You have shut down DirectX and put all the wieght on your CPU. Is that a wonderful resolve to a Windows beta problem? :P

How bout a new Version of DirectX where every time it's called it automatically shuts down that cool looking interface and then restores it afterwords. In this way you could still use all the cool DirectX features.

One for the Microsoft suggestion box?

Thats exactly what it does dude, automaticly,
but it keeps flikering the screen, and it takes about 3 seconds to change to basic, and then back again,

I know it's only 3 seconds but it's becoming more and more of a pain, I rather stress my cpu (3.2 p4) and enjoy fast videos, then wait for the flickering,...

the flickering...

.........the flickering...

...........................the flickering...

then the video

Help

Postby indian_gamer2003 » 19 Sep 2006 18:17

Thank you sooo much for the fix, the only other problem i have is:
1) The 'Always on top' option doesn't work
2) When i set VLC player to play in a smaller window, something happens to the video and it seems as if the video is playing in 256 colour mode

I am running:
Windows Vista Ultimate Edition RC1
AMD Athlon 2600+ Barton Core
1.5 GB Ram (3 Sticks)
GeForce 6600 GT (With Vista drivers)

EDIT: Both the problems are now fixed when i set the Video Output Model to "Open GL".

http://nightlies.videolan.org/
newest nightlies are using new Direct3D output, which should work with Vista.
