VLC player 0.8.5 incorrectly displays subtitles...

VLC player 0.8.5 incorrectly displays subtitles in the middle of the screen, and the fonts seem to be very small indeed.

I play the same movie with another player (MPC player), and the subtitles display correctly.

By the way, the subtitles for this particular test DO NOT have a separte subtitle file. If I understand correctly, this particular movie has the subtitle encoded with the film.

Anyway to correct this? Do I have to twik VLC setting some how to fix this?

To the best of my knowledge the only sub format that VLC uses positional information for is VOBSub, which on my machine displays correctly. All other formats are shown near the bottom of the screen. Your best bet in starting to correct this would be to reset your preferences.

The settings may be found in Preferences, Video, Subtitles/OSD
The Freetype2 font renderer must be turned on and the settings in the Text renderer will vary the color and or size of the sub. DVD subs are not effected.

I confirm the problem

with SSA subtitle (containing positioning information)

the text is crappy, overlapping and in the middle of the screen.
Whereas, if I play it with mplayer2 (the wonderfull windows media player) with vobsub (ver. > 2.23) it plays fine (a bit small but I know how to change this)

You are mistaken....


What you mean is that VLCs support is incomplete for a highly complicated feature called drawing text on multiple operating systems in a player that was not originally designed to even consider such a thing.

I'm getting kinda tired of explaining this. If you want better subs, write code, or use another player. If you want a player that doesn't use the windows codecs, is cross platform, and fully Free, use VLC.
