Snapshot image contains vertical green lines

OS is Windows ME, VLC version .8.4a
Using VLC to watch someone else's home movie on DVD is quite OK.
However, taking a snapshot produces an image with vertical green lines. (Using google, I have seen the question asked in relation to VLC on the internet, but I have not seen an answer.
Using the search function on this forum, I am surprised not to find such a question.)
How does one avoid the green lines?

I get the same thing on my crappy old laptop, I find changing the snapshot format in Preferences/Video from png to jpg sorts it out.
