Stram TV using my old Bt484 tv card?

Postby Wicked2000 » 19 Mar 2006 21:18

Hi.

I have 2 computer. laptop and a desktop one that has the tv card.
They are connected via Wrt54gs router. Laptop Wireless, Desktop Wired.

What I want to do but it doesn't work is to stram the tv card to my laptop.
I installed Vlc on both computers and used the stream wizard.
I can see TV and it works great on the desktop using VLC. But the streaming just doesn't want to work.
File I am able to stram without any problem and it works flawlessly

It's working when I am streaming a file. Why it doesn't work with the TV card?
Does Vlc Supports straming using this card?
There is another software that could do it?

Vlc Finds the model of the card. I am using the same settings as I used with the file streaming.
When I am trying to receive the stream it just doesn't do anything. But with the file it works.

Thanks/

Not all formats and or containers a suitable for streaming that is why there are transcoding options. Not all input formats are suitable for transcoding in some output formats, that is why there are so many options.

Using the Wizard may not be the best choice for what you are attempting to do. Try the options menu called "Stream Output" or the command line instead.

To further help you please provide the native output (audio & video format) of the capture device and the container type. Then provide the internal or external command line you are attempting to use.

It seems to vary with the capture device and and how the Direct Show driver works. Transcoding seems to be dependent on whether the card has a hardware MPEG decoder or not. The units with the hardware decoder are the easiest to do transcoding functions in compatible formats.

The VLC team has not tried to keep a list of cards and make a how to document as this would be prohibitively costly. The best suggestion thus far for getting your card to work has been Graph Edit as it will verify that the Direct Show driver actually works and show the pin configurations for the filters in use. It also shows what the card is putting out IE format for audio and video, which is helpful when it comes to transcoding and or streaming to know what you can or can't do.

Try searching Google or something, for "Graph Edit" or "graphedt". Often times what you find will be missing the help file or the proppage.dll (this needs to be registered but is not required). The newest SDK from Microsoft does not contain Graph Edit.

You could try:

Graphedit works OK ... now what

Postby Aliby » 22 Mar 2006 09:24

I downloaded Graphedit (See my previous post to see the download link) and got it up and running. It connects to the comosite input on my card with ease and I can see the video displayed.
Now...
It's great that this little flowdiagram can render the video input, but I need to know what commands or configuration it has used. What pins or anything else. I have no idea what "DSHOW" commands must be used. There seems to be quite a few and I am just not aware of what they can be.

Can anyone give me some examples of video composite input config lines?

Using 0.84 the pc just reboots when I try to start viewing the tv input. Using the "daily" 0.85 I see there are more input configurations and I need to try them, but for example I don't know how to extract the pin numbers from Graphedit.

I don't think that extracting the pin numbers is exactly what you are looking for. :P

1. Graph Edit allows you to prove that the Direct Show driver works.

2. Graph Edit shows you the format (codecs) in use for Audio and Video.

3. Graph Edit shows you the Chroma format assuming you have and have registered proppage.dll

Using all this information is necessary to complete and test your capture device with VLC and then be able to save, stream or transcode files produced by your capture device. About the only thing necessary to get started is knowing the Chroma format (assuming no hardware MPEG) and how audio is transfered from the card to the computer. Then fill in the information in "Open capture device" including the advanced options.

Some creative users have created Shortcuts and or Playlists to call the capture device or change channels without constantly re-entering the information in this window. You will see the command line structure as you enter the information.

 I found the "stable" release version 0.84 falls over when I try play the composite stream. However I tried 0.85 daily build and it works OK. Initially I went straight into the config and found the option of setting the input and output video and audio pins on the capture device. That is why I was trying to find out what those pins are.

 how do I know if I have the proppage.dll file?

 I can se that the colour format is YUY2, I would love to add that as a config parameter, but have no idea what dshow: ... command/tag I should use?

Anyhow I slowwed down, reset the configuration and then found that it picked up the composite input OK. So it seems to be working OK now.

I am significantly impressed at how powerful this application is and would really like to find out how to drive it properly. (Things like not getting the I tend to get the audio vizualization being duplicated behind the video (Also I am sure you could get it mixing with the video :D ). I get the impression that the options are limitless. But where do I find some help files that put some handles on this beautiful beast?[/b]

Look in the directory where Graph Edit is. Probably "C:\Program Files\GraphEdit" I have only seen it occasionally with the SDK, but it must be registered. The easiest way is from a DOS box in the directory where it exists. The command is "regsevr32 proppage.dll" and Windows will fill in the path. Of coarse it must exist, so if it doesn't, try doing a search for it on the web. :P

This is what you are looking for "YUY2". Some codecs will identify it but not all, that's why I suggested the DLL. Still, finding the dll and registring it is worth while. What are the codecs in use?

Even the Developers admit that the documentation needs updating. I have run across things in the core that are not brought out, mainly because they are buggy and still being worked on. Then there are some things you will discover that should work and don't  But all in all VLC is without peer.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "I tend to get the audio visualization being duplicated behind the video (Also I am sure you could get it mixing with the video)" Subtitles??

Anyway nice to hear you have it working!

Vizualizations

Postby Aliby » 23 Mar 2006 09:51

I want to always have the GOOM visualisation play when I play MP3's.
I set up the visualizations in the preferences-Audio to default to Goom.
IT works great (full screen, 2 display) as required.
Now if I play a video (specifically the composite input) vlc opens two "visualisation" windows one with GOOM the other with the video feed, which is on top. If I modify the rendering or filters sometimes GOOM comes to the top.
More of a nag than anything else - I am just considering how it would effect efficiency of resources etc.

Thanks for the help ... :D

PS Do you think "official" 0.85test1 is more stable than the daily builds?

:?:

Why not create a shortcut with the command line parameters for mp3 or audio files in general. Then shut it off in Preferences.

You also could do the opposite for Video files if you use many playlists for audio.

In one of my earlier posts I stated "This is what you are looking for "YUY2". " While this is helpful, I had to be asleep or something!

The chroma format needs to be stated as I420 or something and is generally used for raw video. If the capture device has a hardware decoder it is unlikely that it's output will be raw. Sorry for the stupid error.

That's why I asked what decoders it was using when I saw YUY2. Most Hardware decoders are MPEG but there are a few popping up now that are h.264 or MPEG4

Sample code

Postby Aliby » 24 Mar 2006 04:53

Where can I get some sample code?
If I had that it would help me understand what instructions the software needed and further more could read.

dshow:// :dshow-vdev="" :dshow-adev="" :dshow-size="" are the ones that is automatically displays, but firstly there must be a whole span more of :dshow-??? that can be usefuly and powerful and secondly what format are the parameters " .... " to take.

If there are some examples from anyone I think it will help getting started.

Sample code?? I think you mean Syntax at least from the appearance of your question?? :P

Go to the VLC directory in a DOS box. That's CD "C:\Program Files\Videolan\VLC" or cd c:\progra~1\videolan\vlc without the quotes. Then type vlc -H and it will print a help file called vlc-help.txt you can open the file with any text editor or from the DOS box type edit vlc-help.txt

You can also go to http://www.videolan.org/doc/ for ideas as to how to use this information. Unfortunately, even the developers will agree the documentation is a bit out of date.

Help Text

Postby Aliby » 24 Mar 2006 06:46

Thanx, How the heck could I have found that otherwise?

Where can I post requests or bugs?
eg. what you told me vlc -H should be shown under the Help menu at least

Also the "downloadable" VLC documentation (HTML) doesn't include the images an so becomes pretty useless. I expect it was just excuded during the archiving, but I would like to let them know.

Another is the fact that the nodes in a playlist are lost when you save it, which is unhelpful as you have to search through lists of stuff to find what you want.
- - - - -
What we are doing is to create a playlist for use at the church.
One NODE contains MP3's which when played present the visualizations
Another NODE has video clips
The last NODE (for now) has the Dshow entry so that we can "switch" to the live camera feed easily at any stage.

This Forum -- Feature Requests :P

Go get um Aliby!

The developers are nice people and do try to help out when they can. So perhaps they can suggest a structure for your playlists to fit the application.

At least you are further along than when you started  and I''m not aware of another program that will come close to what you want to do here.

That was actually dumb not to look at the Forum Index again - I tend to only revisit my or specific posts to watch the development and not see what the general influx is. :)

With this I have to agree. The interface is OK (and getting better all the time) and enables you to get basically what you want - it also makes you realise you are scratching the surface of possibilities with this App and before you know it  you're hooked.

The alternative I looked at was ScreenMonkey http://screenmonkey.co.uk/dotnetnuke/default.aspx. It is really only a projection tool that allows you to switch the display between say a video and the camera and then PowerPoint so there is no ability to play straight audio with visual effects - I did like the transition effects though eg. fading between "inputs"

Thanks again for your help (See you later, somewhere else in the forum)

The developers have not tried to keep a list of cards. If the card is an older analog card it will probably work with any version of VLC. If the card is a newer DVB card then the module has been updated and you should try VLC 0.8.5

The suggestions shown here are are constant for any card as VLC uses the Direct Show drivers supplied by the manufacture of the card.

Ya betta use the Beta

Postby Aliby » 07 Apr 2006 10:08

I tried to fight with v0.84 for a while ... don't bother
Just download the latest daily build of v0.85 and try that directly.
(Set up full screen, display2)
If that doesn't work start making setting changes:
(no embedding etc)
I was preasantly supprised!
